Hey all, I couldn't find anything via the search for this particular case, so made an account to ask this question.

    Situation:
    • I want to retain the 2017 Prius C 2 OEM Head Unit. It is a non-navigation, regular bluetooth CD player model. No carplay, or anything like that. I have no desire to install an aftermarket unit at this time.
    • I want to add a backup camera
    • The installer said they could add a harness to make their camera work on the head unit as if it were OEM.
    Questions:
    1. Is the Scosche CRTTA03 (cannot link because I don't have enough post on the form, you'll have to search for it, sorry) the correct harness to add to make the OEM head unit compatible with a backup camera?
    2. Is this even possible?
    3. Will they take my care apart, find out it isn't possible, then attempt to sell me one of their marked up overpriced head units they have on hand trying to get me to make an impulse purchase to "fix my car"?
    Thanks.

I don't know this product, but Scosche is well known for making little problem-solver doo-dads like this so it seems reasonable at first blush.

From direct experience I can tell you that "the usual problem" is that the factory head unit supplies 6 volts of power to the factory camera. Meanwhile, all aftermarket cameras require a 12 volt supply.

I had to solve this problem in the opposite direction when I added a Sony stereo with 12v output to our 2018 c Two, which included a 6v Toyota camera from the factory.

In theory, all that is required is a relay with a coil that fires on 6 volts so that it can switch 12 volt power on and off to the camera circuit. The Scosche kit appears to have a plug-n-play interposer harness with a couple of wires going into a little black box, which is the ideal enclosure for a relay. In other words it looks about right for what it needs to do, and would absolutely save labor time vs. building similar from scratch.

They'll need to take the car a bit apart in order to thread the camera wiring up out of the hatch through the flexi-duct at the top hinge. Then they can thread it through the headliner and finally down the A-pillar to the dashboard. This is a common installation method for rear vision cameras in lots of cars and there isn't anything special about doing this in a c. If the shop is good, they are good. If they aren't, they aren't.

    Good luck!
