We recently bought an '06 to add to the classic '03 already in the garage. Both have the GPS system.

The '03 includes the ability to modify the suggested route to a destination by specifying a preferred road. There are lots of situations where we know the smart way to get through or around a particular area and the nav system wants to do it the dumb way, so we use this feature regularly.

Looking through the online Lexus nav tutorial, it seems the current Lexus system also includes "preferred route" (it's one of the options avaiable from the "route" button on the main map page.) Likewise, from some of the posts here, it sounds like the '04 or '05 system has this option. However, this feature seems to have been deleted from the '06 Prius system. With a route active, the only options you get with the "route" button are add/delete destination and the generic route preferences settings (freeways, ferries, border crossings, etc). If there's an option to modify a route with a manual selection, I sure can't find it.

Can anyone shed any light on this? It seems so unlike the (feature-laden) '06 to have removed a useful function that was included on earlier models.

PS: I've developed a reasonable work-around: If you don't like the route the syetem generates, create a "destination" in strategic spot in the route you want to use, and then insert it into your flight plan as a first, intermedate stop. The system will then re-cast the route the way you want it.

I remember reading in the nav manual about selecting a preferred route. You can select areas to avoid. Dont remember where. My car is is in the shop and I dont have my pdf handy. I do know its there unless i'm imagining things.

Well, I just re-checked the book veeeery carefully, and there definitely is nothing that allows you to modify a route. Yes, on some map screens you'll see a button labelled "route preference" but that only takes you to the catagorical preferences (e.g. use/avoid freeways, use/avoid toll roads, etc.)

The '03 system allows you to scroll around, touch a specific road and have the route change to include it. This is what seems ot have been removed from the '06 system. Its' called "Preferred Road" and available on the "edit route" screen of my '03 system.

Can anyone say for sure that they have this capability on an '06?

I am pretty sure that this capability does not exist in the 04 Nav system. I get around it by adding intersections or map designations as destinations or just turning or not turning along the route and letting the system reroute accordingly. Not good, huh? The feature you are describing in the 03 would be nice to have.

In my 06 navagation owners manual PDF page 77 "Registering area to avoid" Take a look at that section in your manual and see if thats what your wanting to do. I dont think it is but thats the best I can find. It would be nice to add a preferred route by pointing at it.
