I am supposed to pick up new 06 Prius on Thursday. Dealer claims the car has XM installed. I have Sirius in my current car, not interested in XM. I emailed Sales guy with the part number of the Sirius Solara kit and the static fix link, he claims he spoke to Toyota folks and they claim that the XM kit sattelite unit will work for either depending on who you activate it with?

As a current sattelite person, this makes no sense to me..

Am I missing something or is my dealer salesperson (very good guy) being mislead by Toyota?

Thanks,

Don

I'm almost positive he is mistaken. Different electronics, just different man.
If that was true we could all use whatever we wanted and change. You buy specific hardware.
I have Sirius, the unit says "SIRIUS" right on it. Not the same.

Yes, they are different electronics but those electronics are rarely inside the head unit but rather in the external tuner unit that the dealer is going to install along with the antenna.

I just put XM in my 06 this week. I installed surius for a friend the week before. NO, nada, NYET the tuners are not the same. Tuner comes in one box. Wiring and brackets and antenna (fit kit) comes in the other. the OEM Sirius tuner (toyota part # PTS31-00052) using fit kit part# PTS31-00051.
For XM tuner is 86180-0W030 fit kit PT546-47060

No - different receivers, different content, different companies, different "birds" (satellites). If you have satellite TV take a look at your music options!

- Sirius is on the same birds as the Dish Network
- XM is on the same birds as Direct TV

Many people have this misconception about satellite radio (and TV). These companies are competing against each other AND the local free radio stations.

Well, not exactly (about the satellites).

Satellite radio has to be received by cars with very small and very moving antennas. Frequently among buildings and such, so the satellite needs to be as high overhead as possible.
Direct Broadcast Television uses fixed antenna on your house, with a dish to increase the gain. The satellites can be low to the horizon and the dish moved to accomodate.

So, very different satellites.

TV (DirectTV and Dish) have satellites in circular equtorial Geosynchronous Earth Orbit, meaning they orbit the earth at the same rate the earth is turning beneath them, so from the ground they appear at a fixed locatoin in the sky. Direct TV has three (actually maybe five counting spares) birds at assigned slots along the equatorial plane. Don't know about Dish.

Satellite radio birds are in highly inclined and highly elliptical orbits (molynia if I remember right). These orbits appear as exagerated figure eights from the ground. The purpose is to have them above the receiver as long as possible during each orbit. There's a constellation of several satellites for each service.

The satelite radio you get on TV is received by DirecTV or Dish (probably via direct microwave link from XM/Sirius) and then rebroadcast on their GEO sattelites.

Not that you asked......

Not to confuse things, but the parent company of DirecTv, Hughes, bought Dish a few years back. The Anti-Trust Commission ruled that cable companies compete with satellite for the same service, so it does not violate Trust Acts by having one company own 95% of all satellite service. Is VOOM!, Mark Cubin's HD only service still up?

And to stay on topic...

Is the "OEM Sirius tuner (toyota part # PTS31-00052) using fit kit part# PTS31-00051" mentioned earlier the correct parts for an 06 prius looking for Sirius?

Actually, XM's three satellites, named Rock, Roll and the first of the new series, Rhythm, are in fact geosynchronous -- NOT inclined orbit satellites as are Sirius's. As a footnote, the new ground spare either is or will be named "Blues." So you have the first generation XM sats as Rock and Roll, and the second generation as Rhythm and Blues. So they do not share sat space with DirecTV.

Ah, well according to google you're correct. Thanks for the info. The Sirius constellation was used as an example in Astrodynamics class, and I ASSUMED that XM was the same. Well there you go.
