I have been enjoying my faithful Bluetooth connection between my 2004, package 9 Prius and a Sony-Ericsson T616 cell phone for two years. Now my enjoyment has ended. The other day I got the shocking message, "BLUETOOTH CONNECTION FAILED." I wasn't too worried at first. Things do go awry now and then in electronics. I thought I would simply reprogram everything and all would be well again, but I can't restore the connection. If you can't restore the connection you can't reprogram! Naturally my question is, which end is broken? The Prius end or the cellphone end. I hope this is covered under warranty and if it is, I already expect the dealer is going to suggest that I get a new cellphone before he does anything. Has this ever happened to anyone? Is there a simple preliminary test I can make? Any thoughts or suggestions will be appreciated.

I'd start with the cell phone. Make sure that bluetooth didn't get turned off. If it has some sort of bluetooth device listing, check that. Do you have a BT headset? If so, does it connect to the phone? I don't have this particular phone but my wife has accidentally turned off bluetooth on her Treo 650 and gets this message.

For me, one thing that prevents BT connection is having a wired headset attached. The phone won't connect to a BT enhancement while the wired enhancement is attached. Maybe your phone thinks a headset is plugged in?

If you haven't got it sorted yet, I suggest pull the battery from the cellphone, and when you replace it and turn the phone back on, make sure BT is off for starters. Then in the BT setup menus, delete the pairing for the PRius Handsfree

Then go to the Prius Info->Phone->Settings->Delete to delete the pairing in the Prius.

THen attempt to re-pair the two from the begining. It may be worth turning the Prius off and on again after deleting the pairing before attempting to re-pair.

I know, maybe this sounds like a lot of handwaving and paranoia, but I'm a software engineer for a major scandinavian cellphone manufacturer and honestly this is what I would do (actually have had to do with a test phone I'm currenty using).

If that doesn't help I haven't got any other ideas!!!

Without exception, every time the message "Bluetooth Connection Failed" has appeared, turning the phone off and back on again has fixed it. As soon as the phone comes back up, the "...Succeeded" message appears.

Thanks all. Bluetooth is working again and I did nothing. After three days it came to life again. I keep my cellphone in the console of the Prius at all times, night and day. Could be intense cabin heat shocked the cellphone components. I lost a TV receiver in my parked motor home once. Same way. Lesson. Keep the Prius out of the hot sun or carry the cellphone with you.
