Anyone have problems cancelling a deposit placed on a Prius? We placed a deposit at a dealership in San Jose and a month later found one elsewhere. We were told prior to placing the deposit that it was fully refundable, two months later we still don't have a refund.

I remember that when I first looked at a Prius years ago, the dealer told me that the deposit would be refundable if I changed my mind. Earlier this year when I bit the bullet and signed the contract, I noticed later that the contract said that it was not refundable. I left my checkbook at home intentionally when I went to the dealership so that I wouldn't make any rash decisions, but they took my credit card for the $500 deposit. I would have been very mad at myself for not reading every last word of the contract before signing it if I changed my mind and couldn't get your money back.

Hopefully in your case, your contract states that it is refundable so that they will have to give your money back.

Go to accounting and explain youor problem. Ask for the check to be cut while you are there. If they can't do it, and they probably can't, ask for the General Manager and explain your problem. Offer to pick up the check the next day, or let them mail it to you.

If the GM gives you any flak, offer to write to the Merc-News so that the dealership can explain to the general public through the newspaper what the problem was.

My Dealer had told me that in California it is illegal not to refund your deposit. In fact, I had a deposit at three dealerships and the two that I did not buy from, refunded my deposit on my credit card right away.

AFAIK, no matter what the contract says, automobile deposit is fully refundable in California. Your could talk to them nicely, or sue them. Your dealer knows it. They are just giving you a hard time, hoping that you would give up your money. <_<

Exactly fits my situation and understanding. Strongarm vs. strongarm.

i had multiple deposits down. When i wanted my deposit i would walk up and they would hand it to me. No questions asked.

I ended up letting the credit card company deal with it, needless to say I was very dissappointed with the dealer.
