We recently picked up our 2006 Prius (Barcellona Red/package#3), but are not really impressed with the service departments of either of the 2 dealerships in our area. Are there any recommendations out there? North Bay, SF or East Bay would all be considered. Additionally, do you know of any "honest"/inexpensive independent garages that have certified Prius mechanics?

HiYaAll,

This is a follow-up to my previous post. I took our Prius back to the dealer (Novato Toyota) for the FREE OIL CHANGE @ 5000. Well, they ended up charging me $46. For this princely sum, they did the following:
Check Fluid Levels
Rotate Tires and Report Tread
Check Operation of Exterior Lights
Inspect Brake Condition, Clean and Adjust and Report Remaining
Check Brake System and Fluids
Set Tire Pressure
Reset Service Indicator
Road Test
Since I had no complaints about the car (and had onnly driven 5000 miles), this does seem excessive! From now on, I will go to independent service people unless there is warranty work.

I've heard good things about Japan Auto Repair on Front Street in San Rafael. Any other suggestions?

That sounds like the standard 5K checkup. The price is about right.
