I would like to know if anyone else is having trouble with the dash display touch screen on their 2004 Prius. Just started about 80,000 km. Dealer tells me it is a $4000.00 problem and out of warranty. The tech mentioned there is an "exchange program" for the module, thus I suspect the issue may be more widespread.

Though never a common problem, several other people have reported MFD malfunctions. Most were lucky enough to be under warranty, so Toyota simply replaced the unit. I'd suggest you use the SEARCH function at the top of the page to look for "MFD malfunction".

Sorry this happened to you. Welcome to PriusChat! You might want to update your profile to let us know your location for more specific help. I can guess you're not in the US since you used km for the odometer value, but that doesn't narrow it down too much.

What are they replacing that costs $4,000? The MFD doesn't cost that much.

Not to be too much of a stickler, but where do dollars and kilometers co-exist...?

Canada and possibly also in Australia.

Ah, that makes sense. Still would like to hear more details on what is running the bill up to $4,000 though...

Ya, I'm new. Love the Prius tho. Location - Vancouver, BC, Canada. The $4000 figure came out of a discussion over the counter in a Toyota service counter when I first took the car in when I noticed the odd behavior. Scared the "$*&" out of me, I'll tell ya. Hopefully from your reaction it is not that bad. I will do the recommended search. I did download an instruction sheet for removing a display screen but the photos show a 2003 or earlier Prius. Does anyone think it may be possibly just a poor connection to the module? I could clean with contact cleaner if I could get in there. I did tap the dash and get the screen to react. Twice now I have had an error message saying "check connection at air conditioner". Thanks for any help.

I think I'd raise a little stink with Toyota corporate and see if they'll work with you on the replacement cost...don't expect them to pay the whole thing, but this is a known problem that they're doing replacements on and they can occur at any time. Make sure they know that you know that it is a problem not related to how long the car has been in service and ask why it wasn't a recall item if so many have gone bad.

I think a little sugar and a little sternness may result in a 'labor only' or some pro-rated price to fix.

What's the Canadian 3 year/36k mile warranty equivalent?

Canadian warranty is
60,000 kms full car
100,000 kms drivetrain
160,000 kms hybrid components

After thinking about this situation for a while, I remember an incident in July 04 with aprox 20 -30 thousand km where I got a wierd message/fault code and funny screen behavior. I called dealer and had the car towed in for a check up. They did so and found no problems so I went on my happy way with no more immediate issues. Now I am thinking it was the first incident with the MFD. If I can find a record of that visit at the dealer, would that make me eligible for a back warranty situation?

ps. I had used the fast reply button for my last post and it disappeared into the ozone. Something I don't know about that? Thanks so much. Is there a forum etiquette and instruction page? There is not much in the Help menu.

Very interesting. On one of the Yahoo email groups. there was a discussion on whether to buy the extended warranty or not. An argument in favor was that one large repair would pay for it. The MFD was used as an example. Someone responded that you can get a reconditioned one for $400 and can replace it yourself in 10 minutes, so it wasn't worth spending $900 for the extended warranty.

I wonder where you can get a reconditioned MFD for $400? I didn't think to ask them.

Has anyone had experience opening the top of the dash and checking the connections to the MFD? I suspect the whole panel just snaps into place. I need a TSB( diagram and instructions) on replacing the MFD. I would like to try to fix it myself rather than pay some huge bill after warrenty. Thanks for any help.
