However, occaisonally (about once a day, seemingly at random) the ICE will shut down very roughly at a stop. It feels kind of like "dieseling" or the way a two-stroke engine will kick if it goes lean - just a couple of hard torque kicks on shutdown. I haven't noticed it under way, and it's not really enough to scare me, but it's something I don't really expect out of a new car. Is this something I should worry about? Does anybody else's do this? |

Some people find it happens more on a new Prius, and happens less often after a few thousand miles. It may be they just get used to it, so it's hard to say. Mostly the bumpy shutdowns occur when the ICE is cold. The Prius is careful about burning excess fuel out of the ICE when it shuts down to avoid an over-rich situation on the next start-up; that's probably what causes the gallop. Tom |

And it's for pretty much the same reason you described with diesels... The car stops injecting fuel into the cylinders, so it "goes lean" and shudders as it stops. Pay attention to it, and you'll probably notice it happens most often during the warm up stage (first 5-10 mintues of a trip) and hardly at all after that. |
