Well, the car can detect it if you have Smart Key. Lock the car with the other fob and put that fob in a remote location. Then get a bunch of friends to help you carry the car around. When you get within 3 feet of the lost fob, the interior lights will come on. In order to see this, do it after dark. Be sure to get a video of this for You-Tube.

On a more serious note, I believe the car emits a signal (bigger battery) and the fob responds when it is within range. You can see a small LED start flashing on the fob when this happens (doors have to be locked). It is about the same range as the interior lights coming on. The equipment to do this and sense it is most likely many times the cost of a fob.

If it's lost in the house, have the hired help go on a treasure hunt. (with suitable reward, remember, these things cost well over a hundred dollars to replace, much much more if you lose both fobs) In case I lose mine 'out there somewhere' I took a whiteout pen and wrote my phone # on the fobs, hoping someone would be kind enough to call.
