Hi folks --

Today I had the opportunity to test-drive a 2004 model and it confirmed that I would like to buy one for myself! I spent all evening calling around to different dealers to find out what their status is as far as wait and price. Here are my findings. Please note that for the most part, these do NOT include any value-added extras that the dealer may put on all their cars - for example, one place told me they put a $99 pinstripe on all cars. Usually those types of things are negotiable when you get to haggling price.

What are you looking for? I think Star in Abilene has a silver package 6 coming in next week. They put leather and other stuff on their cars but we stopped them on the silver package 5 that we are picking up next week.

I just came back from Toyota of Lewisville (test drove a Prius for the 1st time).

They have two #6 on the lot. BUT - they are asking $5000 over MSRP. They are crazy, and I told them so. They were willing to "knock $1000 off if I bought today" and I just laughed... They were still nice enough though to let em try my car seats in the car and drive it around so gotta give them some credit I guess...

I just put a deposit down on a new #6 Salsa from Gene Messer Toyota in Lubbock. Charlie was great to work with and I got a good deal, IMO. They will ship it to you. I'm not affiliated or anything, just excited! Anyway, they're at 806-748-4800. Good luck on your search!

They actually ended up throwing it in for free. It might have been because the car has a couple of the port packages (extra mile option A and the stain guard thing).

Originally he had said it would be around $200-$250 for shipping via flatbed truck, or if I didn't mind having the miles added to it, he could have someone drive it out to me if I would pay the cost of the rental car for the driver's partner to follow here and return home, probably around $100.

An update here...

The Toyota of Lewisville called me 3 times today already (Travis, the sales manager). They have the following on the lot:

Package 3 Black
Package 5 Seaside Pearl + leather + extra mile package A (I think)

They were willing to sell me both at MSRP after I laughed at any premium few times. Every time they called - the price would be lower

Those are not the colors my wife wants though, so I am passing and ordering exactly what she wants (she wants to wait rather).

But - it goes to show that they will give you a break if you don't let their sob stories about "hard to find" and "everyone pays premium" get to you!

Thanks for posting the info. Another person at my office (Dallas, TX area) decided to get a Prius and I provided a few contacts. They called Fred Haas 3 different times and talked to 3 different folks. Finally hit a home run. Bottom line is they will pick up their Prius this weekend (just a few days wait) for MSRP. The internet sales manager was the one who made it happen quickly for them.

Lesson learned - if you don't like the first answer when you call a dealership hang up and try again later!

I went to Don Davis in Arlington and ordered Salsa red Package #3 today! Yay, I'm excited. I hope the boat comes on time. They would not go a cent under MSRP though.

BTW - the deposit I gave them is refundable, I checked. They said "Its not like we'll have hard time selling the car".

You know, I didn't even bother calling the dealers in the DFW area after reading some of the horror stories of high prices and waiting lists. Is it getting better up there?
