The oil companies have no incentive to drill, there is plenty of oil, and they could care less about helping the US getting off of foreign oil, its all the same to them, they are a business that only wants to spend money when they have to.

And just assuming that more drilling would do something, which it won't, even Bush admits that, more oil would simply mean less effort into alternatives.
I agree, but some kind of mandate must be made. It would be better than sitting around and doing nothing, hoping that alternatives will solve the problem. Start using our own resources and lock up some scientists in a room like they did for the Manhattan project. We should have started 40 yrs ago, but all of the administrations be it repub or dem have done nothing. Some attitudes are save the animals while humans flounder. I love animals as much as anyone, but we are in serious trouble and our govt is more interested in their own partisan politics than us.

A Democratic administration tried over 30 years ago, no American wanted to listen, well I did, I started buying small cars, but most Americans, no corporate or otherwise wanted to listen, thus the downfall of Ford, Chrysler and GM.

And I agree, I think there needs to be a Major NATIONAL ALTERNATIVE RESEARCH CENTER, funded and out of reach of the oil companies, only way real research will happen.

Also, I have no problem with more drilling, if you think I do, but I'm a realist, the oil companies will sit on their $1.50 A YEAR, 10 year lease, just like they do now, they have hundreds and hundreds of leases now they aren't drilling on. I'm for selling the leases for more money, with a demand that drilling be started within a certain amount of years, but that won't sell leases, they will still wait, they will just buy when they are ready to drill.

Good Point!!!!

(And, I wonder if these promises by the current political candidates to "invest" in alternative energies could fulfill this. Due to the nature of politics, probably not. They keep saying "change, change, change." It makes me wonder)

10-4 on that. Maybe the govt should start their own oil company (which I really hate to say) and start now rather than relying on the greedy oil companys. Also, as much as I like NASA, maybe we should have a moratorium on space (dollars, etc.) until the most serious threat is analyzed, implemented upon, and resolved. You don't spend money on things you like when you have more serious issues that need action now.

I like NASA also, and I agree, Bush and the Republicans have spent way too much money since Reagan, if you add the two debts together, you would see how much wasted money was spent, NASA has to be put on the back burner because of that.

Also, did you know that the US government is spending huge sums of money on fuel, refined and bought in the Middle East, to keep Iraq and Afghanistan going, thats not going to stop until we get out of the stupidness of Iraq, we buy fuel for us, and substidize fuel for the Iraqis, thats a huge amount of spending by our own government on foreign oil. And here is a tidbit for you, the Gulf War cost the US $61 Billion, yet it only cost the US $7 Billion, with in kind replacement and support, with the Saudi's picking up the tab for fuel and supplies, why didn't a plan for Iraq include the Saudi's?

And all for just an additional $4/month on my utility bill. Nice. When the social chaos of Peak Oil comes, at least I may still have some electricity.

If you cover your house with solar panels now, then when the day comes, you will have been prepared. The rest of the world will dwindle, but you (along with all the others that are independent of the power grid) will continue on with your life as normal.

Unfortunately, some with more guns than you will just take them away and you'll be lucky to survive. Let's face it. It 1% of the population prepares and the other 99% don't, we're 100% f@cked.

Well, no.

Eventually I'd have to add more and also batteries and what that entails to go off grid.

And as Tripp pointed out. I'd have to put up bars and barbed wire, buy a gun and learn how to use it......

And my house isn't big enough to produce enough food to be self-reliant, so I'd have to leave some time.

But I am leading in the direction I'd like others to follow. I'm modeling. I'm practicing what I'm preaching.

My worms are doing great. My recycling is full of paper, cardboard, anything on the list.

Today I read about a town in Japan that has NO TRASH, and a plant that takes all trash and generates power without burning it.
