In many species a male will kill the offspring of other males, so that the female will go into estrus and be receptive of him. It is very rare for animals to eat their own offspring except when food is so scarce that the offspring would be unable to survive. In that case, the parent relieves itself of the need to expend energy caring for the offspring, and derives some nutritional value from it. But under normal conditions, animals will eat the offspring of unrelated individuals, but not their own. And since hippos are herbivores, the male would not have eaten the juveniles, so that would not have been a motive.
The male hippo didn't kill the baby hippo for food, but I don't remember if the researchers discovered the real reason. The killing was very intentional if I remember correctly. Everyone was shocked and it was the first time the behavior was observed and the first time it was filmed.

Yes, absolutely you're right... I've seen this on nature programs. It's horrible to watch. Even the smallest baby male hippo is unsafe if the adult dominant male hippo approaches and sees it as a threat to his status. Google it... you'll find videos and documentation on it. It's awful to see.

Polar bears kills cubs. That's why the females go off by themselves to give birth and raise the cubs.

But now, polar bears are turning to cannibalism just to survive. They're attacking each other just to survive. Loss of polar ice.
