I see so many people needlessly replacing the 12V battery when all that is needed to keep it healthy is to charge the battery at home with an automatic battery charger twice a week or more.

Chronic undercharging is the #1 killer of 12v lead acid batteries. This usually happens when driving distances are short.

From the Battery University:

Battery malfunction is seldom caused by a factory defect; driving habits are the more common culprits. Heavy accessory power when driving short distance prevents a periodic fully saturated charge that is so important for the longevity of a lead acid battery. According to a leading European manufacturer of car batteries, factory defects amounts to less than 7 percent.

The battery remains a weak link and the breakdowns on 1.95 million vehicles six years or less are as follows:

52% battery
15% flat tire
8% engine
7% wheels
7% fuel injection
6% heating & cooling
6% fuel system

A breakdown due to the battery remains the number one cause.

* Source ADAC 2008 for the year 2007

Acid stratification, a problem with luxury cars

A common cause of battery failure is acid stratification. The electrolyte on a stratified battery concentrates on the bottom, causing the upper half of the cell to be acid poor. This effect is similar to a cup of coffee in which the sugar collects on the bottom when the waitress forgets to bring the stirring spoon. Batteries tend to stratify if kept at low charge (below 80%) and never have the opportunity to receive a full charge. Short distance driving while running windshield wiper and electric heaters contributes to this. Acid stratification reduces the overall performance of the battery.

Figure 1 illustrates a normal battery in which the acid is equally distributed form top to bottom. This battery provides good performance because the correct acid concentration surrounds the plates. Figure 2 shows a stratified battery in which the acid concentration is light on top and heavy on the bottom. A light acid limits plate activation, promotes corrosion and reduces performance. High acid concentration on the bottom, on the other hand, artificially raises the open circuit voltage. The battery appears fully charged but provides a low CCA. High acid concentration also promotes sulfation and decreases the already low conductivity further. If unchecked, such a condition will eventually lead to battery failure.

My odometer is off by about 5% reading high. I'm ready for new tires and wondered if I can go to a taller tire size and/or taller aspect ratio.

2005 standard/base Prius with keyless entry thing. Stock alloy wheels, standard tires are 185-65x15, can I go to 195-65, or 185-70 (if I can find them)? Can I go larger?)?

And yes, I know this will affect acceleration, but I'm not worried about that. I do NOT want to go wider as they tend to be more expensive (I'm on a budget), and usually will reduce my mpg.

And I don't want to spend money on new wheels.

Thanks!

I'm just wondering how many people are having this issue.

My drivers seat manual recline mechanism doesn't consistently lock in position after you let go of the handle. Often I have to reach around and pull on the seat back to get it to "click" in. It's hard to feel the individual detents for each position which means it's hard to move the seat recline just one notch one way or the other and get it to lock in. Often, the recline will "click-in" sometime after you start driving the car. The passenger seat and the rest of the car works fine.

Anybody else having this problem with either of their front seats?

When I got around to taking the car into the dealer I bought it new from (St Charles Toyota, St Charles IL) they flat out refused to do a warranty repair. The excuses I got:

-"You've just gotta hit it with your shoulder"

-"Other Prius do the same thing... here, let me show you"

-"The mechanic took the seat apart and there's nothing wrong" (the service advisor said the seat was apart on the phone but when I got there 15 minutes later the car was sitting in the parking lot all locked up even though I told him I was coming to look at it)

-"I've had cars that do the same thing"

-"There's nothing wrong... we're done here" (yes the official Toyota Warranty Representative from the region office really said that)

I have a 5-year-old Garmin 2610 gps that has served faithfully, and wanted a convenient mount in the prius. Criteria:

1. Not visible when not in use.
2. Convenient to go from not-in-use to in-use and back.
3. Must attach to an external antenna.
4. Must connect to switched power.

It's not quite as slick as what I did in my previous car, but it's serviceable. I made a removable mount for the front console cupholder, which is just a tapered wooden cylinder turned on a lathe and painted black. The gps mounts on the tapered cylinder with the standard Garmin clip-in mount and permanent adhesive disk. The cords route along the passenger side of the center
console, through a notch I cut to avoid pinching them when the console is closed, and the power is supplied by the in-console 12-volt outlet. When the gps is not in use, the cylinder and gps and cord all stay connected and just stow in the center console. So to use the gps, just open the console, plop the cylinder in the cupholder, put the cord in the notch, and close the console.

I mounted the Gilsson external antenna under the black plastic cowl that is between the windshield and hood on the passenger side. The plastic didn't interfere with reception and hides the puck-like antenna. The cord runs under the black cowl to the drivers side, threads into the back of the engine compartment, follows the hood release cable through the firewall, then across the front underdash, and under the carpet to the center console. FWIW, the external antenna is necessary for the tree-covered streets we have around here, especially for an older gps mounted in the middle of the car.

Looking at the gps screen does require looking down from the road, but we use the voice prompts more than the screen. It works well, is easy to reach, and meets the above criteria. Perhaps these ideas will be useful to someone.
I went to their website to further review what the battery actually does. I also wrote to the company and they said it WILL work with the Prius. They claim one of their engineers owns a Prius and he tested it on his vehicle. I am wondering if you folks think this is something worthwhile to carry along in my car in case of emergency. I just changed my 12 volt battery about 17 months ago. Thoughts??

I read and searched a bunch on this but wanted to be cretain before a drop cash (and more time)...

Should I pay to have Toyota inspect an 06 I am thinking of buying before I buy?

The car was taken in to be inspected but only got the "courtesy" inspection. I am not 100% sure but I think that there is a big difference between the courtesy inspection and the paid one.

the car is at about 34K miles, looks and drives nice.

what do you think I should do?

THANK YOU!:p:rockon:

just found out on carfax- it has been in two accidents and had two previous owners :( scary....

I've had this 2004 Gen2 prius for about 2 months and I'm still discovering things. Ok maybe I'm a bit slow but I only just noticed today that it has fog lights. :o

In a recent thread someone said that if a Gen2 has fog lights then it's probably also got HID headlights. Is that true?

Anyway can I tell be looking at them what type I've got. Does anyone have any links to photos showing what to look for.

Thanks :D
