interested in a local get together. For example, we could meet at the McDonald's at the Pavillions in Scottsdale or other suggested location(s). If it's there it would have to be on a night other than Saturdays (when the oldie cars meet), a Friday?

This would be an informal get together to "compare notes" and take pics., etc. My wife says the cars would be like a bunch of cockroaches (she really means this fondly, not derogatorily), and would really be a hoot.

Any takers? If so, before or after the holidays?

Another License Plate Question

OK - I've read many posts here with regard to the "blue" license plates, what they entitle the owner to, etc., but I haven't seen anything that addresses my questions.

Situation:

So, I want to buy a used Prius. There are lots of them out there for sale, but very few with the Alternative Fuel license plates. The folks (private party) that are selling these vehicles indicate in their advertisements that the car has the blue plate, you will be able to use the carpool lane, etc.....basically using the plate as a sales perk.

From what I understand, when you sell a car in AZ, the plate stays with the owner of the vehicle, not the vehicle itself. I called the MVD and actually have received some "not sure" kind of answers specifically regarding the Alternative Fuel plates versus "regular" plates, which is crazy since they are supposedly the authority on this? If the original owner must keep their Alternative Fuel plate, then every time a vehicle with that plate is sold, wouldn't that mean that the plate would be in effect, "decommissioned?"

I have three "bottom line" questions: Has anyone here either:

- Bought a used Prius or other qualifying hybrid with an Alternative Fuel license plate and been able to keep/transfer the plate to themselves?

- Sold a Prius or other qualifying hybrid and been able to transfer the Alternative Fuel plate to the new owner?

- Transferred an Alternative Fuel plate to another qualifying hybrid that is owned by someone else?

- Can the PLATE change owners??

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Phoenix-metro Prius Service?

What can you well-informed and discerning Prius owners share regarding the competence, price, and to a lesser extent, convenience of local Prius...

What can you well-informed and discerning Prius owners share regarding the competence, price, and to a lesser extent, convenience of local Prius specialists? I'm starting to get involved in the service of a 2005 Prius. I know a good amount of "lore" about maintaining a Prius, but I'm just now doing my own "shopping around" for a local shop.

I'm foremost interested in the mechanic who would be doing the work. The name on the sign out front helps locate their street address, but when you strip away all of the "service advisors" and marketing and reference material and certifications and rent and utilities and capital, what *everyone* pays for is the skill of the person working on their car. Some amount of non-salary things can make a mechanic more effective, but those who do the best job while passing along to customers the least "excess cost" deserve special recognition.

Another thing which it would be very helpful to share is experiences with those things you don't necessarily go to a mechanic for, like tires. Back in April, I struggled to find a tire that was available (and competitively priced) in the Valley that also performed well against the stock Goodyear Integrity tires. Short answer is I went with Michelin Primacy MXV4, ~$485 OTD, A/R @ Discount Tire on Scottsdale just N. of Shea. I'm not thrilled with the tire, but it was the best combination of attributes I could find at the time (lowest projected cost per mile with equal or better noise and handling characteristics vs. the stock tire). I can share more on that if anyone is interested. Even better would be if people can help with what they know: Who "gets" the Prius and offers the best value lube-oil-filter and other regular services, lowest hourly cost, lowest overall cost after markups and fees, etc.

Below is an email that a dealership showed me in regards in transferring my HOV plate from my Civic Hybrid to the Prius. I states that they are no longer transferring the plates. It was very safe to say I didn't order the car. I ended up logging on to serviceaz.com and called the DMV. I was transferred to a level 2 person to clarify this letter. The rep I spoke with stated that this doesn't apply to the Hybrids and she said as long as I transfer my plate (gave her my plate #) to another Civic Hybrid, Insight or a Prius that I would be allowed to keep it. She said that most likely I would have to take the paperwork to the the DMV to get the plate transfered if the dealer wouldn't.

I called the dealer back and they said that there title people weren't allowed to transfer the plates any longer. I will try and get them to waive their doc fee as I will have to register the car myself.
