wireless micro utility light for upper glovebox

Hi, I saw this light advertised online: ANTOnline.com - RiteLite LPL632 Rite Lite LPL632 Drawer Light...

Hi, I saw this light advertised online: ANTOnline.com - RiteLite LPL632 Rite Lite LPL632 Drawer Light
It is an led light that is small and wireless (powered by watch batteries which are included), and operates via a magnetic switch. I got to thinking about how that might work well to install in the upper glovebox, which has no light. I just installed it, and it works great!

The magnet is very small (about .5" x .75" x .25")and probably not very strong. The micro light has to be less than an inch away from the magnet to work. However, I was wondering if there is any chance that the magnet would mess up any onboard computers, or the lcd display, etc. I have the magnet mounted in the center of the tray in the upper glovebox.

My question is this: Does anybody know if the magnet is close enough to anything to cause problems? Would it interfere with the smart key system?

Thanks in advance, Chuck

No, this isn't a retread of the "retrofit it in" thread. I already read that one, and wasn't pleased with the conclusions. Instead, I've got what might prove to be a workable idea.

There exists in the GenII Prius a single DIN slot below the radio. Since the radio unit is mostly useless space on the dashboard, since it's easily controlled by the MFD, I figure a solution like this might just work.

Mount a "flip out" GPS unit in the bottom slot, and let it flip up over the radio when in use. This would not impair the radio functions, since they're on the steering wheel and MFD, but would give me that wonderful giant touch screen that we all seem to want.

The problem is, I can't find a flip out GPS unit. I've found lots that are amazingly integrated (read super-expensive)...but none that are just GPS, and I have a major problem paying $900 or more for what will end up being just a GPS unit.

I certainly don't need the extra functionality, beyond the stock system...I listen to AM talk radio!

First...has anyone done something like this? And, second, does anyone know of "just a GPS" in this form factor?

Thanks!

Chuck

After market wheels and impact on MPG

I just purchased a second hand 2007 Prius and it needs new tires. I wish to put on aftermarket wheels to improve the look. As I have been inquiring about wheels for the Prius, I have begun to hear over and over again how the Prius is specifically designed the way it is to maximize fuel economy. With that in mind, I have decided to keep the wheels at 15 inches, but what about tires? I have to replace the tires because they are worn.

How much do Low-rolling-resistance tires cost and what kind of deficit in MPG can I see if I go with $60 cheapies tires. BTW, I live in Socal so the weather is always nice in case someone was wondering about winter tires.

Has anyone put on wheels on a Prius with different offsets so the tires are flush with the body of the car and not tucked in? If so, what offset will result in the getting the tires to flush with the car or stick out just a bit?

I have also tried to get information about the Kenstyle body kit and the impact it has on MPG. If anyone cares to share or point me in the direction of other threads that answer this question then please do as I have been unsuccessful in doing that.

Thanks in advance.

OK, my Prius has 124,000 miles on it and 100K of those are with the TRD shocks and springs. It is time to replace those shocks with some new ones that will return some of the tighter handling the car had 100K ago. I have searched and the only replacement shocks for the '04 to '09 body I can find, other than the TRD's are made by KYB. Does anyone know of any other aftermarket manufacturer making shocks for our cars? Thank you. Cairo

What's the deal. I wanted to put a hitch on my pruis for maybe hauling bikes and/or luggage on a cargo tray on long trips with the family. Anyway I went online and decieded on and ordered the Coastal 2" Receiver Hitch. It just seems like there are more options with a 2" Reciever. Anyway that was back on in the middle of Oct. A couple of days ago I wondered where it was and I sent them and e-mail... Here's the response:

"One of our customer service representatives had given you a call to let you know that we are currently out of stock of the receiver hitches for the Toyota Prius. Your order was voided and the purchase amount was refunded back onto the card. Plesae let me know if there is anything else that we can do to assist you.
Please let me know if I may assist you further."

After not getting a response from a follow-up e-mail I called this morning. The guy there had no information on when they might be getting any more in stock. All he could say is that they are out of stock... Anybody else have similar experience with this company... are they that bad of a company. Anyone else know of source for a 2" receiver hitch. He couldn't have been less helpful. They are just our of stock with no forseeable date of getting more in or anything.

I really hate companies who advertise they have a product and then don't have it in stock and for what I can tell, can't get it either.

I'm a little upset I've got a long family trip planed and was kind of counting on being able to use a cargo trey to put a few things on... I guess I'll be shipping some of the luggage there via fed-ex.

Thanks

We just got a booster seat for our youngest who's just turned four. It has built in latches that snap directly into the rear seat hooks. The seat works great. Until, that is, my son falls asleep.

Since there's no side head restraints as in the child seat, he can't stay up straight. I'm afraid his neck will suffer. Adults also have this issue on airplanes, and that's why we see a proliferation of those neck supports sold at airport boutiques.

I'm currently using two small pillows especially made for children in car seats to help keep his head straight a little bit. But they only work marginally without a seat.

Is there some kind of headrest that can provide neck support, especially for shorter children in booster seats? I'm thinking of something to replace the existing headrest that extends downward (instead of up) and has two sides wherein one's head can be held in place.
