But I am now looking to get a GPS vehicle nav system. I am leaning toward the Garmin 265WT.

What about Magellan and Tom Tom?

What is a good resource with the hottest and newest models?
Thanks!

Hi everyone. Great looking community here. My wife and I were out looking for a replacement for her Mazda 626 when we fell for the 2010 Prius. The problem? Well, I commute about 85 miles a day, 82 of them highway, and we got to thinking... about how much sense it made to see if I could find a used Prius for my commute. We don't want to take the new car to my job site (it's manufacturing, and we occasionally leak dust and things that blanket cars - not so good), so we're looking used. There are lots of 2004-2007's around, and we were thinking the older the better for maximum highway mileage abuse. The questions that we had were these - will the Toyota dealer's certification extend the battery warranty? what other issues does one look for on a used model? Any input would be greatly appreciated. :)

So I am buying the Prius in 2 weeks, when it gets off the boat.

The dealer said that if I traded in my car and prepaid for the Prius before it gets off the boat, he'll have all the tags ready for me as soon as it arrives.

In the meantime, he said I can have free use of a Prius from the lot. It guess it is their loaner car.

We already settled on a price and everything.

Should I bite? Is this a trick? If it is a trick, what is the angle? Has anyone heard of this?

Of course, one danger is that the Prius on the boat is not what I wanted (wrong color etc.). Then I am stuck because I've already traded in my car. And I suppose if I have to wait another 2 weeks, the dealer may not let me have the loaner - which means I'll be carless. Also, another angle is that maybe in the 2 weeks the dealer finds a defect in my traded in car and demand more money from me. I am confused. I am inclined not to take it. Although it does seem like a nice deal.

My 97 Tacoma was diagnosed with a rust perforated frame. I was advised not to drive the truck.
I was without wheels, living alone in rural Haliburton Ont.
I went online to find a used Prius. I found a good deal in Pennsylvania (vin checked out, 1 owner) the only snag was for the owner to bring it to Canada, he had to show ownership. This meant forwarding the money before I saw the vehicle. My FP cautioned me not to make the purchase because I would have to deal with 2 gov't agencies. I declined the deal.
I found a 2007 Prius in Toronto (2-1/2 Hrs away). I negotiated online & made arrangements to see the vehicle. I had to take a bus down & my son met me & drove me to the owner. I test drove the car & was impressed with the digital displays & power everything. I made the deal.I regret not performing the checks I had made on the previous vehicle. The owner did disclose the car had been in an accident in California & was rebuilt to safety standards.
Fast forward to June 28, 2008. I was driving through Kinmount Ont. when a red triangle with an inverted exclamation mark appeared on the dashboard. I stopped the car & checked the oil & coolant. Both appeared to be OK. I restarted the car & the Triangle appeared again. I checked the manual but could find nothing pertaining to the cause of the red display. Other orange icons instructed me to take it to the nearest dealer. This happened to be in Lindsay . a side trip from my Oshawa destination.
The trip was uneventful to the dealer where I explained the problem to the service desk. They took the car in & after about 15 min., 4 mechanics came into the reception area. One technician informed me there were codes displayed that they have never seen.
Due to the day being a Saturday before a long weekend, they advised me to bring the car back for a more detailed diagnosis on the following Thursday. They could not offer me a loaner so I asked if the car was OK to drive. They assured me it was. The only request they made was to keep the icon on the dash to aid in the diagnostics. I mentioned that was ok as I was used to seeing it.
I drove the car to Oshawa & on my return trip home, the engine stopped . I could not restart it.
I called my son, & after an hour passed, he arrived & we arranged to have the car towed back to the dealership. They were closed by that time, so I made out a service envelope describing the situation & dropped it through the mail slot. My son then drove me home.
On the Tuesday I received a call from the dealer requesting permission to remove the head & send it to a machine shop to test for warp. Apparently the coolant pipe had disconnected from the Thermos tank & the coolent was lost, resulting in a seized engine.
They replaced the engine & when I went to pick up the car, was presented with an invoice for $5206. plus change. I argued that I would pay for a new pipe, although the original was only 2 years old, the replacement coolant & the labour charges pertaining to the repair.
They would not release the vehicle without full payment.
I argued that I had brought the car in under it's own steam. (no pun intended) & that the mechanic was negligent in telling me the car was operable & to bring it back in 5 days.
I retained a paralegal & after 2 previous court sessions, the case was finalised today.Tuesday Nov. 17
I am to pay $650. to cover court costs.
The judge said I was negligent in driving the vehicle after I saw the icon. It was raining that day, I was in the middle of nowhere surrounded by forest & with no phone. I argued that The manual instructed me to take it to the nearest Toyota Dealer & I had gotten to the dealership without incident . He then said I should have left it there despite being told it was safe to drive.
I think his judgement was unfair but"you can't fight city hall".
I would like to hear some comments as to whether Priuschat readers think I was treated fairly or not.
Incidentally, I was scammed out of my 97 Tacoma truck by a former mechanic from that very dealership. He paid me $4000 for the truck & Toyota Canada gave him #18750. (I was informed of the recall 1 week after selling the truck. THe dealers were notified 2 months prior to the notices sent out to the owners). He happened to be a close friend of the sales manager/ owner of the dealership. This transaction was initiated by his wife at Community Care, 5 months after my wife passed away.

Background--two years ago we were thinking about trading in our nice comfortable LeSabre for a Prius, but after driving 7000 miles to VanCouver and back, we decided we didn't want to give up the comfort, trunk space, 30+ mpg, power, 6 passenger ability, etc. Since then I have driven my sister-in-law's Prius over 1000 miles and enjoyed the comfort and mileage. So now my wife owns a bright red 2010 Prius III with added heated leather seats. I enjoy the experience and I absolutely love the fact that they got rid of the obnoxious big screen that makes you drive into trees. This is the first foreign car I have owned and still have a problem with that. This is also the first car that I purchased outside of our (small) town, but there is nothing else in the same category. Luckily there is another bright red Prius in town and people may think it is them when I drive by.

Yesterday, my girlfriend picked up her Blizzard Pearl / dark gray Prius II with floormats from Toyota of El Cajon (east of San Diego).

I've only spent a couple minutes in it but it's great so far and she loves it.

I highly recommend Toyota of El Cajon and the internet/fleet salesman I dealt with--Rene Wolfe. We visited several dealerships in the prior weeks and this was by far the best experience. We got a great deal and the whole process was a pleasure. There were no greasy salesmen tactics. I was given a price and it wasn't a "only if you do it today" price.

I took some photos but I need to downsize them and I've misplaced my software that allows me to do so.

Hi,
First off I love this forum! I have learned more in a day reading here then any other single site and even the dealers (which should know more - it IS there day job). Thank you for the help already.

Now for some questions That I could not find, have gotten conflicting info on, or just do not understand what I read.

1. What options are TRULY optional?? I have found before while buying that some "options" are not really optional and you are forced to "buy" since that is what is default on the car. (BTW this really burns me since it is just another level of deception.) I know I have to deal with it so being forewarned is best. . . for example I expect the $260 mats etc "option" is not a option. . .anything else??

2. What IS the difference between getting a III with dealer installed leather and a IV?? Both in items and ball part $$ . . I have gotten allot of conflicting info here. what ARE the after market add-ons possible? I heard that a "normal" sun/moon roof is possible?

3. IS it better to get a III and upgrade it then to just get a IV? reasons? (I really want leather - and I have yet to decide on nav, XM is not needed, ipod/iPhone support is nice though usb or the aux jack is ok)

4. The Nav package I am a bit confused on what exactly it entails and if it is worth getting (opinions).
a. I want Bluetooth, but it is unclear about what that means. (I think "Bluetooth" phone is standred but Bluetooth streaming music is nav only??)
b. Is the ipod controls incompatible with a Ipod touch or phone?? (not clear) . . .and how does the USB connection work?? (just for charging??)
c. Is the nav system + backup cam worth the $$. I know this is quite an opinion charged topic but this also goes with the other questions. (chances are it seems that IVs are hard to find without the Nav etc) a fair functional GPS would be fine as long as it works. if I am going to be fighting it constantly I may opt out . .
d. any other info on this package? as allot of sites say what it is but not in any great detail. (on the of real questions I have with the car)

5. How is the Car in snow, ice, mud, water? Personal experiences? (I have a Scion now and can drive it through just about anything, So I have no need for a SUV ans such)

6. where there any annoying "got-yas" in the buying process? or afterward that forewarning could help others to avoid?

Thanks for any responses!

Just picked up my new Prius IV last Thursday. I have already ordered some accessories from the forum--glad I found you so quickly! I have a question--moderator, please re-direct me if I am in the wrong spot. I need some info on using the ECO mode--my salesman said to mostly drive in the default mode, but it looks like more use ECO--at least in town. I drive 12 miles to "big" town at 55 mph several times a week, but putting around our area shopping is within 3 miles of home--rural small towns. Looks like I should be in ECO for that. Too early to tell my fuel usage--I'm still trying to figure out how to drive this strange little thing! :D Going to go by the dealer today to see if they can hook up my phone--that Nav system really taxes my old brain cells.

Picked up our Prius II yesterday and wondered where we should have it serviced. Would it be a mistake to bring it to a reputable Toyota mechanic vs. a Toyota dealer because of the complexities of the Hybrid system?

Dealer pros:
Knows the hybrid system
warranties

Dealer cons:
more expensive (?)
Mechanic pros:
Toyota certified
Mechanic cons:
I have had our previous car (not hybrid) serviced by the mechanic in question and I've been very happy with his work and price. I assume he will tell me that all his guys are Toyota certified and qualified to work on a hybrid.
Any thoughts, opinions or experiences?

I have searched and not found much information on this issue here. I have been driving my 2008 Prius for 14 months and in all that time my floor mat that came with the car has not moved a teeny bit. I do not see why it would move as the underside is thousands of rubber prongs that grip into the carpet below and it is still in its original non damaged shape. But I just got the recall letter from Prius and it looks like my car is included. It seems crazy to not remove the mat if it is a danger, but I can't figure out how it could even happen. Anybody know?
