Also, I saw the ScanGauge II Scan Tool + Digital Gauges + Trip Computers in the shop section.
Do I have OBDII in the 2002 Prius? If yes, is it worth it to buy this scan tool?

Got the dreaded HV warning exclamation. Toyota dealership checked error codes and said HV ECU needed replacement. Paid $1,300 and had it fixed. Driving away I could tell immediately nothing had changed--hybrid system not propelling car correctly--battery levels dropping suddenly on display. Took it right back. Their tech had replaced the ECU but not test-driven. Several days later they finally got a code indicating bad cell in HV battery. Cost to replace: $3,300. After I complained, they contacted Toyota and now offer the following deal: pay $1,200 more to replace the HV battery on top of the $1,300 already paid for HV ECU replacement. This is a 2001 model with 128k miles. Does it make sense to put more money into this car? My other option is to have them put the old HV ECU back in and pay labor costs but drive away in present condition. I'm not sure if driving it with a bad battery cell and faulty HV ECU is dangerous, risky, or just annoying. Any advice?

Just about to start the replacement of the toast transaxle on my 2003. I bought it like this for a song and now I have to do the dance. It was run dry from a slow leak and I have found a low mileage replacement in Edmonton which should arrive Monday or Tuesday.

Car has about 104k miles / 168000 km and is in very good shape otherwise.
The search for the transaxle is documented in: http://priuschat.com/forums/generati...xle-ideas.html
First one is a 2001 and the second is a 2003 for $750 each.
They both run but I have not had them on the road yet.
I was told they did not run and had thought that one of them would make a good conversion to pure electric since that's what we do.
Since they run I might do one as a PHEV. Are these older cars capable of the EV only modification like the 04?
Thanks

Seems my 01 w/ 140K is throwing the cat code and the dealer wants just over 2K to replace here in CA. The question I'm hoping this forum can help me answer is...
1. Based on other posts there seems to be a gate valve of some sort that sticks.. Is this easy to get to and lube just to see if it gets the light to go off?
2. Is the Eastern Cat different from the CA version or will it work? I found a replacement cat on-line for less than 200 but it sounds as if the internals are different but I want to make sure it will work both as a bolt-in replacement and be ok with the special blend of fuel in CA.

Thanks in advance for your help

Bit desperate. It must be a sign of the quality of these things that I haven't been posting for a while but I now have a problem.

I bought a 2002 a year ago and all has been well. This car was for my dad in the UK, I am in Greece working and it has developed this problem. I am trying to diagnose through my sister. She has taken these two pictures. I can call on friends to assist and if required I can get the cell voltage read outs off the main battery, I already got a friend to charge the small battery but he is very nervous about this particular car having no experience at all with hybrids. The car does very little miles, average maybe 2 miles a day.

Before I do call on people to test specific things I would appreciate some input so that I can hopefully not take too much of their time and minimise any risk because obviously things need to be approached differently. I've searched some on here and other places but am struggling to find specific tests that can be defined.

Car has done 90,000 miles and is in pretty good order generally.

All input gratefully accepted.

My daily commute is about to go from 34miles round trip to 100miles+ round trip. I am selling my truck that gets 16mpg and was looking at some used cars for $5-6k. I was looking at traditional compact cars that get ~35mpg, but then I found several 01-03 Prius' for the same price range with between 60-80k miles.

What type of things should I look for when considering these cars?
What questions should I be asking? I have read about some issues with the batteries in these as well as the transaxle. Is there anyway to make sure these are in good condition. I would like to be able to put another 50k miles on the car without having to deal with repairs, although I am very mechanically inclined, so I do not mind going through the car for some preventative maintenance.

Any help is appreciated!
Thanks!

We ran the TV and a lamp. Then I took my wife's Prius to get dinner. I got home just in time for the power to come back on:
