* The BBC’s coverage of the present war has been so extraordinary that even staunch BBC supporters in London seem rather embarrassed – in conversation, not on the air, unfortunately. If the BBC were just a British problem that would be one thing, but it is not. No other station broadcasts so extensively in dozens of languages, on TV, radio and online.

* A careful look at aerial satellite photos of the areas targeted by Israel in Beirut shows that certain specific buildings housing Hizbullah command centers in the city's southern suburbs have been singled out. Most of the rest of Beirut, apart from strategic sites like airport runways used to ferry Hizbullah men and weapons in and out of Lebanon, has been left pretty much untouched.
From the distorted imagery, selective witness accounts, and almost round-the-clock emphasis on casualties by the media, you would be forgiven for thinking that the level of death and destruction in Lebanon is on a par with that in Darfur, where Arab militias are slaughtering hundreds of thousands of non-Arabs.

* CNN "senior international correspondent" Nic Robertson admitted that his anti-Israel report from Beirut on July 18 about civilian casualties in Lebanon, was stage-managed from start to finish by Hizbullah. He revealed that his story was heavily influenced by Hizbullah's "press officer" and that Hizbullah has "very, very sophisticated and slick media operations."

* Another journalist let the cat out of the bag last week. Writing on his blog while reporting from southern Lebanon, Time magazine contributor Christopher Allbritton, casually mentioned in the middle of a posting: “To the south, along the curve of the coast, Hezbollah is launching Katyushas, but I’m loathe to say too much about them. The Party of God has a copy of every journalist’s passport, and they’ve already hassled a number of us and threatened one.”[/b]

Is this another one of your heroes? Perhaps you should read some more about him.

There's a former U.S. congressman running around the world these days blaming America for the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

His name is Paul Findley, and from 1961 through 1983, he served as a Republican member of the House of Representatives from the state of Illinois.

Last year, he said President Bush had it all wrong when he told the nation that we were attacked by evil and fanatical Islamic terrorists on Sept. 11. The real cause of the devastation our nation experienced that day was because of our unjustified support for the nation of Israel, he explained.

Just before Sept. 11, Findley released a book called "Silent No More," an attempt to improve the image of Islam in the United States and vilify his arch-enemy Israel. Obviously, the book didn't do very well in post-Sept. 11 America. But don't feel sorry for Findley. He seems to find enough money to travel the world and give speeches – particularly in the Middle East.

Findley has never gotten over the fact that he was turned out of office because of his own somewhat fanatical support of Yasser Arafat in 1982, even while serving as a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

Recently, in Saudi Arabia, Findley explained the Bush administration had "overreacted" to the Sept. 11 attacks. Overreacted. He thinks most Americans don't understand the complexities of the Middle East debate because they have been hoodwinked and deceived.

"They have been misled by the American media, which is controlled by the Jewish lobby," he said.

Findley thinks he was defeated by the Jewish lobby, and he thinks Americans are deceived by the Jewish lobby.

OK, it will turn many of your stomachs . . . Fox News, Bill O'Reilly . . . etc, etc . . . but you really should see the August 2nd interview he did with Dan Rather – especially the part about “some (American) networks give moral equivalence to Hezbollah in the reporting of this war.” Dan Rather's comments shocked me. I mean jaw on the floor shocked!

THE NATURE OF HIZBALLAH

Formed in 1982 to resist Israel's occupation of Lebanon, Hizballah established its terrorist bona fides in the 1980s by kidnapping some 50 foreigners in Lebanon, including 18 U.S. citizens, and killing two of them, notably CIA station chief William Buckley. The group's global reach was achieved perhaps in 1985 with a suspected connection to the saga of TWA Flight 847, in which hijackers shot dead a U.S. Navy diver and dumped him onto a Beirut tarmac. In 1992 Hizballah bombed the Israeli embassy in Buenos Aires, killing 29, and, in 1994, a Jewish cultural center there, killing 95.

It is a nasty crew. Consider what prompted Hizballah leader Hassan Nasrallah to arrange for the kidnapping of two Israeli soldiers on July 12, which is what led to the current crisis. Nasrallah says he wants Israel to release from prison Samir Kuntar, a Lebanese citizen who was part of a Palestine Liberation Organization (P.L.O.) cell that in 1979 arrived by boat in the northern Israeli town of Nahariya and invaded the apartment of the Haran family. Smadar Haran hid in the attic with her daughter Yael, 2, and was so intent on stifling the girl's crying that she accidentally suffocated the child. Meanwhile, members of the cell took Danny Haran and daughter Einat, 4, back to the shore where, realizing escape was impossible, Kuntar shot Danny in the back and drowned him, then battered Einat's head on beach rocks and smashed her skull with his rifle butt.[/b]
