I just got an expense check from work for my driving from September. $405 plus change
I drove 2237.1 miles and bought 45.329 gal of gas which at an estimate of $2.25 a gal cost me $102!!!!Of course all I spent on the car upfront is forgotten!

Talk about payback!

Quite seriously some of my coworkers have suggested that I drive my car to branch locations rather than flying.

Sounds like you're getting the short end, that's only about 0.18 per mile. Make sure you keep your records and deduct the difference off your taxes. The IRS is at about 0.41 per mile. I am reimbursed at 0.37 and the difference at the end of the year is substantial.

Don't forget the wear and tear on your car, tires, that pothole you hit and the alignment you'll need, accelerated depreciation due to the miles you put on behalf of your work, etc.

Yep. The mileage stipend is supposed to cover wear and tear and depreciation as well as gas. Calculate the total cost of ownership (purchase price plus all gas plus all maintenance plus any repairs plus ???) and divide by total miles driven to arrive at your cost of ownership per mile. That's what they should pay you to break even.

I wonder if anyone's ever done an estimate for the Prius, with reasonable assumptions about vehicle life and average mpg and total maintenance and repair costs?

Oh No! I am reimbursed at the IRS rate of 44.8 per mile so not all miles were work miles.

I alos figured at $2.25 a gal / 50 MPG that buys 9000 miles worth of gas!!!!!!

since the spaceship turned 14,000 today, athe one check paid for many of those miles!
