WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The "blind sheik" who inspired the World Trade Center bombing has been hospitalized, raising fears of new attacks if he dies in U.S. custody, the FBI said in a bulletin.

Radical Egyptian cleric Omar Abdel-Rahman, 68, spat up blood on December 6 and was rushed to a hospital, the FBI notice said.

Rahman has strong ties to al Qaeda and is seen as a key theological force behind the terror group. He has been mentioned often by Osama bin Laden and his deputy, Ayman al-Zawahiri.

Rahman, who is serving life in a U.S. prison, has himself called for attacks if he dies in jail. Law enforcement sources stress that there is no intelligence to suggest there are any attacks being planned.

This is pure idiocy.

They should publicly execute this guy in the middle of Ground Zero.

Just think we're paying for his healthcare costs...

Just how offensive is that?

He's currently being imprisoned at the Federal Medical Prison here in Springfield, MO. My hospital has the contract with the FedMed to care for their patients. It's entirely possible that he could come into my ER this weekend, while I'm working, and I'd have to take care of him.... How offensive is THAT!?

That sucks but I know that you will do all that you are capable of to save his life even though he deserves the Pork-Chops choked out of him.

Glad its you and not me. He should be wearing bright orange and be surrounded by ACLU reps. I love the fact we are paying for this ding's care and upkeep.
