The problem is our leader does not carry the same cultural view of those in "old cultures" where greed was not in their vocabulary and the welfare of every person in their tribe was equally important. In those systems status was gained by helping others and giving away any wealth you might have accumulated.

This suggests two distinct "waves" even before Mr. Toffler's three. Otherwise, classifications like Mr. Toffler's are generally so grossly oversimplified as to be pretty much useless.

Daniel:

The book is over 500 pages so yes it is difficult to summarize it with a book report of a few paragraphs. I apologize. The thrust was to provide a readers digest overview that there are hidden blueprints of our society completely unaware by the majority of people. These can have a huge effect on their lives. That is all I was trying to get across.

Except that in band-level societies the "skilled individual" will lead an activity, e.g. a hunt, and once the activity is ended, he is just another member of the band. No special privileges, no more food than anyone else, etc.

In my opinion, the keys to a happy life are:

1. Living in a good family environment and
2. Having a career/job you really like

The other things - money, friends, health, are beneficial, but not enough unless you have the first 2.
[/b]
I would add 'finding something that transports you' - for me, that is music. So much of music is just so incredibly beautiful! This beauty brings me joy.

There are a lot more factors than just living alone.

For instance "skin hunger". Americans don't touch or get touched enough.

Wow, how interesting. I've never heard of this term until now, but sure have felt it...am feeling it now for that matter.

I don't have nearly as much tactile contact with another human being as I did when I was married.

At the risk of oversharing, I think sometimes men, and (yes) I, confuse this with sexual desires...
...when, really, what I'd like most of all is to simply be touched, and held, without any overtly sexual acts required of me.

Fascinating. And all along I thought it was just me who felt like this.

absolutely , isolation and loneliness are big problems. I know, I work strange hours.

why are so many fans of "reality" tv? and so many hooked on their computers and the internet?

we could go on and on ........ nothing compares to real human interaction.
