"VATICAN CITY (AP) — Got road rage? The Vatican on Tuesday issued "Ten Commandments" for drivers, telling motorists to be charitable to others on the highway..."

"It warned about the effects of road rage, saying driving can bring out "primitive" behavior in motorists, including "impoliteness, rude gestures, cursing, blasphemy, loss of sense of responsibility or deliberate infringement of the highway code."

"It may be surprising for people because we're accustomed to the church speaking out about sexual matters, capital punishment, immigration," he said. "The point Cardinal Martino is making is that driving is itself a moral issue. How we drive impacts on the lives of ourselves and others."

("There was no indication Pope Benedict XVI had approved of, or even read, the document. It was signed by Martino and his secretary — as is customary for lower-level documents that are routinely put out by the offices of the Vatican's vast bureaucracy.")

1. You shall not kill.

2. The road shall be for you a means of communion between people and not of mortal harm.

3. Courtesy, uprightness and prudence will help you deal with unforeseen events.

4. Be charitable and help your neighbor in need, especially victims of accidents.

5. Cars shall not be for you an expression of power and domination, and an occasion of sin.

6. Charitably convince the young and not so young not to drive when they are not in a fitting condition to do so.

7. Support the families of accident victims.

8. Bring guilty motorists and their victims together, at the appropriate time, so that they can undergo the liberating experience of forgiveness.

9. On the road, protect the more vulnerable party.

10. Feel responsible toward others.[/b]
2 and 9 are the same.
4 and 7 are the same.

Looks like the Catholic church just likes rules in 10. If they had the commandments on how to screw in a lightbulb, there'd be 10 of them.

1. Thou shalt not kill with the light bulb.
2. Thou shalt obey your father in the manner of screwing the light bulb.
3. Thou shalt not pray to the light bulb even though it gives you the ability to see in the dark.
4. Thou shalt not screw in the light bulb in a manner consistent with sodomy and bestiality.
5. Thou may use the aid of another to screw in the light bulb but the aid may not come from another of the same sex(except for your father).
6. Thou shalt not covet your neighbor's light bulb.
7. Thou shalt screw in the light bulb only when it is safe to do so and when it bears no risk of accidents to others.
8. Thou shalt not pretend to screw in a light bulb if one does not know how to. He may receive the guidance from his father or the aid of another unless that other is of the same sex of the light bulb screweree.
9. Thou shalt not screw in the light bulb on the sunday for that is the day of light bulb screwing rest. If you observe someone screwing in their light bulb on the sabbath you are obligated to smash their bulb with a stone.
10. You may not use the lord's name in vain if you screw in the light bulb incorrectly. You may say, "The light is not with me today," and seek the aid of another who knows of how to screw in the light bulb. This aid giver may not be of the same sex as you.

Does this mean that the religious right has to give up their SUVs?

It's good that the Vatican has come out against killing, domination, and sin.

I'm joking; don't they *always* come out against that stuff?

-------

What really concerns me is how we'll reach all the non-Catholics...since they're the ones who probably commit most of the infractions anyway.

"How we drive impacts on the lives of ourselves and others."

Aggressive driving, rage, rudeness and irresponsbility certainly describe what we see on the roads around here.

Points are worth noting, and if it comes from a source which will be noticed worldwide, maybe some good will come of it, all cynicism aside.

The general public has been driving cars for how long.....and the Vatican is just now getting around to providing religious guidance on the use of cars?

In another century look for the ten commandments on use of the internet and computers.

Suggestions from the vatican isn't going to do squat. Monetary consequences for illegal behavior would be better. Just hire a ton of unmarked cars with tailgaiting sensors. They can pull over car after car on the freeways an bring in a ton of revenue too.
