Default 50/56 mpg in the CRX HF. Really? What's the equivalent 2008 EPA mileage?

I was looking up some fuel economy figures on Fuel Economy and noticed that they've updated all of the cars in their database (which goes back to 1985) with new-for-2008 fuel economy numbers. I often get emails or blog comments asking why today's cars don't have the phenomenal fuel economy figures they once did. People tend to cite cars like the Honda CRX HF -- a flyweight two-seater that was advertised at 50 MPG city/56 MPG highway.

A pretty good article comparing EPA to EPA figures of new and 20-year-old cars using the 2008 formula.

I had an 88 that got nearly 250K on it. Got 50mpg - 60mpg if I was trying. May have gotten 78mpg @ 50mph one spring day, but consuming little more than one gallon, it's not that accurate.

A tune up nearly destroyed it, but it lasted four more years.

I consider the Insight a hybridized CRX HF - main difference is different powerplant and aluminum. About 20% better FE

I had an 92 Civic VX (48/55) that had 150K on it. Got 42 hwy mpg in winter.

If I had replaced the o2 sensor it may have been better so I've heard...

But it ended being a donor car for an engine swap to make a drag car (because of its weight)

Seems like Honda was the greener company in the 80s and 90s.
