No special modification was done on his Prius.
He just monitors Prius status using Japanese version of CAN-view and SuperMID M-1 mileage meter.
Yes. The outside temp was 37°C or 99°F, but he never used A/C.
The average speed on the last 292 km was 44 km/h (27 mph).
I don't know his average distance, but I'm sure he didn't do short trips.
The basic technique is pulse and glide. I think he pulses up to 50 km/h and glides down to 40 km/h.
He never drove on highway during this challenge.

99 degrees and probably 75% humidity.
And my spouse thinks that I'M insane.
I wonder how many pounds of salt pills he carried with him.

very awesome acomplishment no doubt, but no record in my mind. at 104 mpg, that doesnt beat what was done here 2 years ago.

to base a record on just total mileage for what is essentially a different vehicle is one way to look at it and it should be recognized but how about stats on top mpgs only with tanks over 1000 miles? i would be interested in a top ten if available

99F? That's nothing. A couple days ago it was 108F, according to the car but over 100F for sure though since they said no the news it's the first time we broke 100 since like 1987, and I didn't have the AC on. I had my window all the way down though.

I also agree that 104 MPG isn't the best. I know I've seen over 120 MPG in a Prius, but even that's not the best. Didn't they get over 150MPG in an Insight and go over 2,000 miles on one tank?

I don't have top ten, but AFAIK the best one is 115.5 mpg (49.1 km/L) by teddy-girl@akita in Japan last year.

Would you please tell us the pointer for the over 120 mpg record?

You're correct. But, this place is Prius forum and the world record is of course done by Prius.
The Honda Insight is small light weight two seater and I believe we can't compare it.

The Prius marathon in Pittsburgh PA scored 109.3 mpg overall according to:

http://www.toyota.com/html/hybridsynergyvi...l/marathon.html

With a total distance of 1397 miles on one tankfull with bladder.

Wayne Gerdes achieved 120.6 mpg on a single shift behind the wheel, which may have been the number that Alexstarfire remembered.

I can't remember the lengths of those shifts; perhaps 4 to 6 hours? I know that our heroes found them exhausting.

I remember it.

It was 120.5 mpg (51.25 km/L) for 93.7 mile (150.8 km) in 3 hours and 51 minutes.
DaveinOlyWA's proposal is "only with tanks over 1000 miles".

That means that the average speed was 24.34mph.

I really think we should put some type of limit on these records. Not to discredit what they've done at all, it is quite impressive.

However, knowing that so many of us read the above information, there are probably people thinking "I can beat that over 93.7 miles!"

So maybe the MPG records should be based on a minimum number of miles. For example, you could have a max MPG over 50mi, and a max MPG over 100mi, and a max MPG over 200+mi.

I think everyone in this forum could probably achieve 100+MPG numbers on a 50mi trip using our favorite stretch of roads. The 100mi figure is definitely more of a test of skill, and certainly 200+mi is as well.

Personally I think it's more impressive to hear someone got 105.9MPG over 227mi than it is to hear they got 119MPG over 75mi.

If we had a different societal outlook on driving in this country,
we'd probably have a lot more in the thousand-mile club. But right
now it's just about hopeless unless you search long and hard for
just the right sections of road. A couple of guys have very
fortunate commutes and surroundings, but most people feel *way* too
pressured by traffic to have any hope of coming close.

I agree. It's sad but true.

I have found a new route home recently after studying the topozone maps in detail. Not too many cars travel that way and speed limits range from 35-45 over about 16miles. There are several spots where I can pull over in a long turning lane and let the speeding SUVs go past me at 10mph above the speed limit. Aside from that it's a great drive that I had to work to find.

I got 73.5mpg yesterday going that route, and I'm fairly certain I could pull an 80+ on it as well. 120 would be pushing it tho
