Personally I think it's more impressive to hear someone got 105.9MPG over 227mi than it is to hear they got 119MPG over 75mi.

What is impressive to me with the Japanese hypermilers is that they are doing it in their normal commutes over several weeks/months, not a marathon session without daily warm up cycles. Think what teddy-girl would've gotten without 30 something first 5 minute warm ups?

Oh, I couldn't agree more!

The marathon sessions take out all the warmup periods and everything else from the mix. It's nice to know it can be done, but real world driving probably wouldn't produce the same results.

i think ALL OF US can find times in our lives where we got great mileage for relatively short stretches. my current tank is an example. for most of the tank up until 400 miles i was doing 68 mpg...(ok... not quite in the hypermiler league but this is just regular driving) but since then life dictates driving that is not as efficient so now at 540 miles, i have dropped to 62.5 miles and might be under 60 when i fill up (still have two bars) i would have loved to fill up at 65+ mpg. that would have been a record for me and i could if i wanted to. i know a few routes that i average over 80 mpg on (i drive one of them to work every day!!) but to drive just for stats is something i wont do.

so there has to be limits to any record keeping and i think the 1000 mile plateau does a great job of weeding out all but the best.

The REAL SAVINGS from not driving Corolla 604.39 +Prius= 880.83 (excludes maintenance costs...would be unfair to ICE vehicles)

Ken, several folks on this forum have recommended using AC in hot weather to keep the battery cool, under the assumption that the battery's performance suffers in the heat. Others have suggested that air flow from keeping the windows open is sufficient and, with its greater convection, possibly better than AC. Obviously Kazu's experience suggests his battery is doing just fine. What is your view? Is there a consensus? What do the other Japanese hypermilers do in weather like that?

When exploiting the optimum pulse and glide technique, there is little, if any, battery power usage. The battery and it's state is of little relevance here.

It is if you're using AC.
