My first 60mpg tank

I got my first 60MPG tank, and it is only the second tank I've had in the car, so I am very happy

553.2 mi @ 63.6 MPG

I filled up 8.34gal which calculates to 66.35 MPG. I was a bit disappointed it wouldn't take more gas, but I wasn't going to risk an overfill, so when it stopped pumping I left it at that.

I had a few really good trips of 16+mi:

8/16 - 16.1mi 73.60 mpg
8/17 - 16.2mi 71.03 mpg
8/27 - 16.1mi 76.90 mpg
8/29 - 16.2mi 70.66 mpg

I drove a total of 19 days on this tank at 29.12 mi per day.

During this tank ScanGuage II reported 60.5 mpg, which is off by about 5.19% so I have adjusted accordingly.

Standard deviation for this tank was 5.14 mpg.

Congratulations! It's a hell of a feeling the first time you see that 60 sitting there looking back at you, isn't it?

wtg.... not as hard as you thought it would be was it? i think we all realize that these tanks can be had if you have the right kind of commute.

Yeah, it feels great! And it wasn't that difficult to achieve. Comes naturally as well.

I am confident I can get 65-67mpg tank on this go around. I was going highway during the first 3-5 days of that tank. So I am certain I can get higher, assuming the route I take doesn't have heavy bus traffic when school starts next week. Otherwise I am back to the highway

I'm at 8000 miles. 13 or so tanks of gas and consistently this between fillups........

Do you understand the modes of operation termed here as regen, glide, stealth, and warp stealth? And can you transition between those modes, consciously, at will, with your right foot (gas pedal)? Basically that's how I do it. If you've got a handle on those concepts, you can do it too, with just a little practice.

There is not a single down-hill incline that I travel, that I'm not in one of those ICE off, no gas* modes. I can apply these techniques to rush-hour traffic , flowing right along with traffic, not holding anyone up. I look forward to rush hour now, because I know I can jack my average way up, just gliding along, between a ICE(uphill) or Stealth (level to downhill) pulse. *[i] or nearly no gas

All other interstate travel is done at 60 - 65 MPH with cruise control. Preferably 60MPH. (Someone around here coined the slogan 60 MPH = 60 MPG , and it's true ) All steady speed interstate travel is done with cruise control. I was not a believer at first, but the cruise control is way quicker and more precise at maintaining these efficient modes of operation during steady-speed travel.

Other routine, off interstate driving, is done with a somewhat modified pulse and glide technique. With emphasis on using gas going up the inclines and gliding down, or possibly maintaining speed or momentum by extending a glide with electric stealth, when necessary, to get to that next incline where I can glide. I shoot for keeping the speed under 41 MPH in those areas, for a true glide, but can go faster if necessary and do it as warp glide/stealth.

I admit it's not just mindless driving (droning) along, like most folks are used to, but it's all second nature now, I don't really think about it that much. I use the Energy screen when my foot's in control, Consumption screen when on cruise control.

GA topography lends itself to some good long distance glides. There are 1-2 mile sections of interstate that are inclined downhill that the Prius will go into glide ,then warp stealth, and maintain 60 MPH, for the whole length with cruise control on. And I can also do it myself, but cruise control is much more precise. I can exit the interstate and not use gas again for the over 2.5 mile "back road" highway route left to my house, using my modified pulse and glide. I can exit the interstate at work, one of the Hartsfield airport exits, and stleath-pulse and glide for over a mile to my parking lot.. IF SOC is mid to low, ICE operation may be required to keep up speed and peak the inclines. But soon as I peak, back to glide or warp stealth. And of couse these techniques are applicable anywhere. Others have said drive like you don't have brakes , and I take my foot off the gas as soon as I see a red stop light/ brake lights ahead. It astounds me how people will accelerate toward a stopped traffic condition, only to throw on the brakes moments later, and waste all that gas.

I am convinced the "45 MPG lifetime members" don't understand/employ these techniques. They simply aren't exploiting the unique capabilities this car has. I'd have to do doughnuts in the street everyday and drive around with the emergency brake on to get 45 MPG ; )

60MPG tank.

I've had three in the two and a half years I've owned mine and even when not vigilant about mileage, I've still averaged no worse than 50 -- but then again, I'm here in FL where the winters are mild and the terrain flat.
