iPod battery drain via VAIS AIC-100i?

Hi folks,

Haven't been able to refer to old posts (I know DaveFromOlympia commented on this earlier), but here's the sitch:

I have my new iPod Nano hooked up to my VAIS AIC-100i. (Works a treat!!)

However, when I shut the Prius off, I checked the Nano (still attached to the VAIS) in the glove compartment, and noticed that the screen was still on, and the VAIS logo was on the screen.

Two questions:

Is the Nano eating power off the Prius' battery? And if so, is it marginal, or enough to be significant? (I used to leave one of those recharagable mini-flashlights plugged into my old Civic's cigarette lighter connector, and it would sit all night blinking without draining the battery appreciably. However, the Prius has (I think) a smaller 12V battery than most cars.)
What are you guys doing -- disconnecting and shutting off the iPod before you leave the car? Or just leaving it hooked up? (Another option might be to put it in Simple mode -- that removes the VAIS logo, and maybe the iPod will shut down after that.)

I should add that, for all intents and purposes, I plan to let my Nano just sleep in the car most of the time.

nope not eating power from battery. after my post, i had many people tell me erroneously that if i provided no input for a certain amount of time, that the ipod would automatically power down. this is not true.

if you have your ipod set to shuffle and power down the car, the ipod will continue to play on its own power. with the car off, the battery will not be in play. you should be able to tell by the power icon that is running on battery power.

the only work around i have discovered as of yet is to stop or pause the music when i turn off the car. in this mode, the ipod will power off after a short period of time.

I would check it yourself to be sure, but I gave it a quick check after I installed the unit and I believe iPod shut down completely within a couple of minutes.

I'm not certain about shuffle mode, I'll have to check it tomrrow as this is how I've been running it.

I'll check it again tomorrow.

still quietly peeved at myself for getting the ipod2car about six weeks ago...

At the time I ordered it, it was the best I could find. No the charging won't drain the Prius - it's negligible

Now if I could only get my money back from the ipod2car and 'upgrade' to better controls...

ah well, I shouldn't complain - too much.

If you check the net, there are many reports of ipods getting into states where they don't power down. I've had it happen to mine a couple of times. The general opinion is that is a firmware bug that hasn't been fixed yet by Apple.

This isn't related to the AIC-100i.

The recommendation I've seen is that if this is happening to you, resetting the ipod usually fixes it, at least for a while. You don't lose any contents on a reset.

The reset method varies with the ipod model; though most of the newer models are the same. For the photo ipod, you first move the hold switch on, and then off. Then carefully (simultaneously) press both the menu and select buttons and hold for 6-10 seconds, until the apple screen appears. You may have to try multiple times.

well this situation maybe mute if you are in AIC mode. i use simple mode simply because i like it a lot more. i thought having the display to see what song is playing on the MFD would be cool but it doesnt provide enough info to be worth it to be honest with ya.

i tried it in AIC mode and several times, when first powering up the car, the ipod would start up and occasionally not be able to play the song it was in the middle of when the car was previously powered off. flipping to next song solved it easy enough.

but since i have it on shuffle, its goes through the 1400, and counting, songs i have and if i want to i simply look at the ipod display where it shows the artist, song title and album. this isnt available on the AIC. it only shows what the title of the group is.

also, when the car is powered off, there is no power to the stereo, so only the ipod battery is running down. that is why i just pause the ipod when i shut down. not a big deal to me. have had other car stereos and amps hardwired to the battery, so used to it.

I played with it today and it appears that if I just power down the car while in the middle of "rand" under AIC control, the iPod lights up momentarily. It then powers off a couple of minutes later.

That's not to say that if it got stuck in some weird state that it wouldn't keep playing and keep tapping the battery. I guess if I were going to leave the car sitting for any length of time, I might disconnect, etc.

I'm feeling pretty safe about assuming it's going to turn off.

I'll be sure and let you know if it causes any issues.

Gents, greatly appreciate the info and the double-checking. I rarely (if ever) have RANDOM turned on, and my own tests show the iPod switching itself off after a few minutes (or if note off, at least the screen is off.)
