That's worth a lot to me since I just managed to grab a T68i off ebay. It's AT&T but I'm getting the SIM card.

My only concern (besides the phone actually powering up) is whether that's good enough or whether I need to activate it.

My guess would be not... I've seen demo T68is running with non-activated SIM cards in the stores.

The T68i is quite a nice phone, except for the interface being horribly slow. You'll find that it takes a minute or so to boot up, after which the interface speeds up, though it's still no speed demon. On the plus side, however, it'll easily fit in the pocket of my jeans.

Verizon's V710 is a whole different story.  If you can live with no audible ring and no ability to upload your phone book, then it should be fine.
Looks like the new flash for the V710 takes care of all outstanding issues except phonebook transfer.....gotta find another way to get one's contact list into the car.
Does this mean you've already tested it? Because according to Verizon it's supposed to restore the missing profile that prevents phonebook transfer.

Not personally, no. I tried to get the flash today at a store that has it but the flash failed. The phone wasn't bricked; the flash simply didn't work. Tech guy said it was a problem they should have resolved by early next week.

However, at least one Prius owner has had the flash done and has reported it does NOT fix the PB transfer problem. Here's the link to HoFo:

FWIW, I have a LG PM-325 (Sprint). The setup and connection are xlnt. Took a couple minutes to set it up, and it connects within a few seconds of turning on the Prius.

BUT

The sound quality is sooooo awful that it's barely useable. If I can't find settings or something to change the sound quality I think I'll just take the phone back.

The Nokia 6820 works quite well. Only issues are
It's a nice phone - folds open to reveal a full keyboard, but when closed is the exact size and weight of most other Nokia phones. I see it for $49 with activation on Cingular / AT&T

Well, now I have......tested it, that is. I got the flash today and still no PB transfer (pretty much expected that, though). It did, as I expected, knock out the transflash-to-phone audio transfer but I re-enabled that with a seem edit.

I don't know......the car is incapable of "sniffing out" the phonebook (like the BMWs) and there's way to initiate a transfer from the phone.

I've had a problem with the V551 that I didn't have with the V710; there is a long delay from the time I dial and send a number to the time that I can hear the recipient answer the phone.

With almost every call, the recipient hears nothing for the first few seconds after they say "hello" nor can I hear them - very annoying. By the time I hear them, they are saying "Hello? Hello?" or have already hung up.

The inability to transfer more than one phone number to the phone's address book at a time is less than ideal.

The V710 had other issues; inability to transfer phone numbers from the phone to the car's address book and the lack of a ring when an incoming call came in.

I have V551 and have been very happy with it ever since. I experienced absolutely no such issue. In fact, the sound quality is so good, it is beyond my expectation. I recommend you get a new unit because the BT cricuitry on your V551 may be broken.

When I got my V551 (two of them), one of them was actually broken. I had to return it. It is not rare to have a broken BT circuitry.

On the distance of connection, I once left my V551 in kitchen and the Prius picked up the connection while I pulled it out of garage.

My experience with the V551 and the Prius is that if you have the Bluetooth connection up and dial from the phone, there is the delay previously described in being able to hear the call. If you dial from the car, there is no delay.
