very poor radio reception -AM pkg

i knew the stock stereo wasn't one of the strong points in the prius, but wow. i can't lock in strong stations that i had absolutely no problems with in my other car. this leads me to wonder whether i'm having equipment problems. does anyone know...

1) is the antenna powered or passive?
2) has anyone else improved reception by replacing defective parts?
3) are owners with the upgraded stereo pkg having reception probs too?

I have the base stereo as well, and I've noticed two things:

1) A few strong stations don't come in quite as well as they do in other cars

2) The Scan feature is MUCH more forgiving than other cars, stopping at nearly every 0.2 frequencies.

Antenna is powered (amplified), so strong stations may be overloading the input.
