Dad gum it, I remember distinct coolant pump noise in the past, I think I still hear it, but now I'm paranoid that there's a problem even if there isn't one. Guess I'll have to keep a close ear.

Mine does not make any more noise than it used to, except I do hear
like there is bits of sand in it now. Mine never had the sand sound even. It started when I let the car sit a week at the airport, now I hear the sand sound. Its been the same for about two months now. I have the extended warranty, so I will keep a ear, eye on it I am glad the toyota dealer is only two blocks away from where I work. Mine is
a 04-05 production car. I almost have 8,600 miles on it.

Evan you have that scan tool don't you? if so just watch the engine temp on start up if it rises before the ICE starts the pump is working.

Yea, I have, and it seems to show a rise in temp, but the tool is a little odd in that when you turn it on initially it flashes 2 different temps quickly back and forth. No idea what that means. Once I start going and the temp starts to rise it settles into one temp.

Honestly, I think the pump is working fine and I'm just being paranoid...but I'm at 33,500 so I'm freaking out about every little thing that might/could go wrong before the 36k mark... Never mind that I have the extended warranty, my paranoia doesn't secumb to logic!

Evan i feel your pain...

but POSITIVE THOUGHTS!!

dont underestimate the power of positive (or negative!~!) thinking

i kinda wonder about the timing of the pump... what controls it?

i have noticed that sometimes, the pump runs almost immediately after i turn the Prius off and other times, it takes as long as a minute before it does anything.

to be honest with ya, i hadnt thought much about it until i read this post so dont really recall a lot of the details between either scenarios

**edit**

i have just realized that i have not changed my coolent yet since ive had the car... what is the replacement cycle on this?

100k mile initial interval, then 50k mile thereafter when using Toyota SLLC (pink). If any other coolant is used, it changes the interval.

I am sure a DTC would be set if the pump failed.

anytime up to 5 hours after shutdown the pump can run. Normally it's just when you shut it off, when it refills the thermous if the conditions are right, but can selftest the system anytime within 5 hours of shutdown. This from the NCF manual.
