Default Car Talk: '04 Prius service done by independent mechanic

Google found a Car Talk article discussing whether you could take a '04 Prius to an independent mechanic (i.e., not Toyota service dept).

Scroll down to the bottom of the page to their response from a Seattle (Lake City) Toyota dealer.

Opinions?

My opinion is: any dealer who says
Quote:
Although you can take the Prius to an independent facility for maintenance, the factory-scheduled maintenance is covered at no charge by Toyota for the first 36,000 miles.
should have to stand by that claim...

Yeah, that's not a true statement, is it?

I remember hearing (here) that some dealers were doing some maintenance free, but my dealer certainly never mentioned it.

The 2004 Prius does NOT come with "free" maintenance.

I understand that earlier model year Priuses did.

Took Delivery tonite. Still jazzed 8)
Dealer was very explicit about schedued maint being for fee... and here's this kewl service contract to prepay for sched maint that saves money.

We have 1000 miles to think about... ie we can still purchase up to that long.

What are folks doing about extended service contracts...I know the battery is covered for up to 8 years or 100,000 miles...however what about all the fancy computer controlled electronics...If you drive your car for at least 100,000 miles doesn't make sense to purchase an extended warranty for the electronics?
