Hello,

I just got my new Prius and have a question for other owners out there...

Occasionally (and most noticeable when the engine is cold) the engine starts at a stop or going slowly and then shuts down. When it does this, there's a slight stumble and a shudder as it shuts off. Is this normal and just an artifact of the temperature, or a much bigger problem?

Thanks, Matt.

The shudder is normal when

a) the car is new
the engine is cold

Occasionally, the shudder turns to a violent shake which is rather disconcerting. However, as it gets warmer and your car gets broken in, the engine will stop much smoother to the point of no indication other than silence (if your radio is off) or the Energy Monitor/Consumption Screen so indicates.

np. At first I thought there was something wrong with the demo car I drove but when my own car did the same thing, I figured it was normal and it is.

hehe.

also, make sure your foot's firmly on the brake. I've noticed that I sometimes have a very light touch on the brake and my baby doesn't know I want her to take a nap.

yeah if my foot isn't completely on the brake, the electric motor will still suck power from the battery and try to move the wheels (but I'm stopped anyway because the force on the brake is more than the motor is making) as if to simulate the "creep" effect of a normal car when the engine is idling. I suspect the engine would also think that it wouldn't have to turn off if you didn't press all the way down.

So my apologies here maybe for worrying, but I'm now at 5,000 miles and the shudder when cold is still pretty intense. Has anyone else noticed this go away after 5k (or at least become less noticeable) ?

Have you looked at the 5 stages of Pris operation yet? Here is a link:
http://priuschat.com/forums/kb.php?k=14&mode=article

I have seen this same question several times so you aren't alone in wondering about it. I have the impression that it is more distinct in some cars than others. Or maybe some of us don't notice as much? My car is a bit rougher when it shuts down in stage 2 or 3 than when it's in stage 4. I have 20K miles now and to tell the truth I have seen no difference due to mileage, cold weather may make it rougher though.

When they are cold, they do that. It's just the way the engine works burning off the remaining fuel, and not cause for any concern.

Mmm...does your entire car shake even with your foot on the brake?
