We have an '04 with 80,000 km on it and the MFD has just failed showing the symptoms described in TSB EL002-05. The dealer will happily repair it -- $3000+ for the part plus labour. They tell us our Extra Care Protection extended warranty doesn't cover it...even though Toyota knows that the part is potentially defective as described in their own service bulletin...unbelievable.

The part is defective; Toyota knows it's defective; we paid $1700 for an extended warranty that was supposed to cover everything; and our only options are to pay for the repair ourselves or drive the car as is. Thanks Toyota.

hmm... maybe things are different in CA? i don't know what the warranties up there are like but i don't see why they'd exclude something like the MFD. down here they have a refurbished MFD exchange program, part costs ~$400.

maybe you could inquire about that program and see if they participate?

Since there is a list of exclusions, demand they show you where it is excluded.

If they cannot, demand they replace it.

If they don't, complain to the higher ups AND go to a different dealer.

There is a history of these going bad....they should honor the extended warranty.

call Toyota Canada's Customer Interaction Center at 1-888-869-6828 and just a heads up you'll need your VIN which is on the dash and the odo reading and the TSB number and tell them you have the extended warranty from Toyota and the MFD failure is a known defect. If this doesn't get the response you want ask them for the snail mail address of the Corporate HeadQuarters so that you can send them a note via registered mail outlining your problem. Make sure that you register it in fact double register it and send a copy to the service manager and another copy to the bussiness manager of the dealer ship. Also send a copy to the BBB in Ontario. This will get you a MFD for sure. I believe the address for Toyota Canada is
Toyota Canada Ltd.
1 Toyota Place
Scarborough
Ontario
M1H 1H9

Hope this helps. Dont' give up and document every thing that you've done, and do.

Frank, I'm wondering if I should take mine into the dealer even though the problem haven't resurfaced? Or should I send Toyota Canada a nice e-mail?

I too have an '04 with the extended warranty - Toyota has replaced it twice, no questions asked, no charge. Your dealer is, as the kids say, wack.

We've already talked to 2 dealers -- same story from each. Apparently they put the part number into their system and it comes up as 'not covered'. We'll be contacting the ECP division directly today. Hopefully we'll get a reasonable response. I've seen a couple of different reports from people who have had this replaced under their extended warranty which is certainly encouraging.

Our past experience with Toyota is that everything is a struggle. They are not, at either the dealer or corporate level, eager to step up and take responsibility. I just wonder how many others in my area have paid the full price to replace a defective MFD.

By the way, we have already contacted Toyota through their customer care number. Their response thus far is 'talk to your dealer'.

Anyway, the struggle continues...

keep the pressure on. Worst case scenario is that you should end up paying around USD$400 for a refurbished MFD. Almost everyone here has been successful pleading their case to get Toyota to cover it.

One could think that Toyota has its act together enough so all customers in all countries are treated the same, and one could be wrong...
