As for saving power....I don't think it really uses that much that it would make a difference. Even if it did the safety of having the lights on outweighs the minor power consumption of the headlights while in motion.

Ok, but how can you see the MFD screen during the day as it is dimmed when the headlights are on? I can barely see mine unless I turn the headlights off. In fact, that is how i am reminded to turn them off every morning, when I can't see the screen.

Roll the interior light-brightness wheel (in the dash to the left of the steering wheel in the US) all the way to the top, until it sort of clicks. This locks the interior displays and MFD on full bright.

Just making sure . . . we are talking DRIVER DOOR . . . yes?

Opening any other door will not turn off the headlights – only the driver door.

I also leave my headlight stalk switch on 99% of the time for daytime safety lights . . . and thusly, I have learned some hard lessons on proper Prius operating etiquette.

1) If you cycle the power button ( into either READY or IG-ON mode ) while the driver door is open, the lights will not go out if you power off the car while the driver door is still open. Even if you close and reopen the driver door after the fact, this too will not work.

2) Entering the car from the passenger door, then cycling the power button . . . the headlights will not automatically go off. I found this one out on a trip and using a 12 volt adapter to place a cell phone call with a weak battery. Luckily someone alerted me several minutes later.

I wonder how many people have drained their 12 volt battery this way? I have come close several times. Thankfully, the Prius only needs enough 12 volt juice to power up the computers, not crank over an engine.
