My dealer tried to sell me one of those "protect your car" deals that I was sure was to inflate his profit. One thing he said was "Because the Prius has all the eletricity constantly flowing through it it is more susceptible to corrsion than a normal car." Any truth to this statement? Is undercoating necessary for a car which will be used in the midwest were salt on the streets in winter is a way of life? Or is this what I should expect out of a car salesman, BS?

Undercoating is often worse than useless because it can plug drainholes and trap corrosives. Much better to wash the underside weekly in the salt season.

The electricity bit is nonsense. It *could* happen if the insulation were faulty, but then you'd have a much bigger problem than corrosion.

Quote a Salesman: "Because the Prius has all the eletricity constantly flowing through it it is more susceptible to corrsion than a normal car."

I really have to laugh aloud at such an innane statement - but it IS a "Salesman." That's about as absurd a comment as I've heard lately. If it were me, I would avoid purchasing from a salesman who made such a statement and probably report his comment to his Manager.

True, the "extras" he was touting add profit to the sale. Comparing "Invoice" prices to MSRP on a Prius with Package 7 and Option A, the dealer makes a tidy 19¼% profit on the sale - about $6,000 - plus the "factory holdback." And that's without the extras that salesman is touting. Seems to me that's more than enough profit.

Fremont Toyota, who on the phone promised me they would sell the car at MSRP plus tax was at least honest about demanding I buy those things for $3,500 They said it was because they need more profit on the Prius. Needless to say I didn't buy the car from them.
The next dealer that had a red package 3 and promised MSRP plus tax was honest and gave me a great buying experience. That was Freeman Toyota in Santa Rosa. I had the car exactly one week after I called them. They located one coming off the boat in LA, called me and I had it that Saturday.
