The engine noise at high RPM has been getting louder on our 2004 Prius with 21K miles. Almost like a bad muffler. Anyone else have this happen?

Hi Dilbert

My 2004 has just under 22,000 miles on the clock. I have not noted any change in ICE sound as the miles increased. My only real noise issue is with the OEM tires, particularly on rough pavement; however, since I keep my radio tuned to my favorite Classical station, this tends to mask some sounds.

Are you sure? Noise at a given rpm should not change, but with colder weather it should run much more at higher and noiser rpms.

Please visit your dealer to find out the root cause of the problem.

Dilbert,
Great to see you again. Dude, you really need to come around more often.

Since it's an '04 and you've been through a couple winters like Charles, Ken and I have, I'm going to assume that you're not talking about a cold engine working a little harder. With 20,250 miles, that's all I notice but only during situations like dead-stop acceleration.

Until you take it to the dealer like Ken suggestions, let's do some troubleshooting. Have you had someone run the ICE while you're standing outside the car to help locate the source of the noise? Are there any situations in which the noise is present or more noticeable? What is the air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow?

Yes it has been a while since I last posted, just busy I guess. The engine sounds fine at idle and regular driving. It is only when you put the pedal way down to climb a hill that it gets louder, and I mean louder than it used to. Even my wife commented about it without me asking. I better get it in to the dealer.
Thanks for the help.

What do you mean, an African or European swallow?
