I am reaching the 35,000 mile mark on my baby and wanted
to know if I really should purchase the extended warranty (990$)
that Danny boasts? Also, there is an extended Service Plan that
is cheaper advertised on that same site (WarrantyShack.com).
Please advise..and thanks for the info on the 30,000 mile
check..I am thinking I need to go with my manual in hand.
Thanks in advance.. :

FWIW, i've always made out on extended warrenties. got a 3 year extended on my last car for something like $500, and ended up charging over $2500 to the warrenty - not too bad!

I also already purchased the extended warrenty for the Prius.

Howdy GreenNNC

I plan to buy the Extended Warranty just before the 3y/36K expires (be a long time). Hopefully, the $950 price available here in PriusChat is still around then compared to the substantially higher prices the Dealers try to charge - some I've heard up to ~$1,800. Since I bought my 2004 slightly used (4,000 miles) I can't purchase a FULL Extended Warranty so my decision to upgrade to a new 2007 was partially prompted by my ability to purchase the Extended Warranty.

Due to the complexity of the Prius and very expensive replacement costs on some items, I believe the Extended Warranty is a good idea if you plan to drive your Prius well past the 36K miles bumper-to-bumper warranty has expired.

I just past 34,000 miles on mine, and plan on getting the extended warranty as soon as I pay down some of my credit card debt.

GreenNNC -

One reason to consider, if you are thinking about extended warranty - - Towing coverage is included!

Also - - if you don't opt & are faced with a big repair bill later, I don't want to be around!

Good luck,

Just read the post about the guy that needs just a 12v. battery. I love my Prius but if the unexpected happens I like knowing I won't have to pay for repairs for 100k mi. Give troy a call!

Normally, I'm with Homer on extended warranties (he only liked them after shoving a crayon in his brain through his nose). However, I purchased the Prius extended warranty and I sleep better at night.

Don't get me wrong--I love my baby, BUT...It's new technologyand my MFD is failing under high temps and the brakes make a funny barking noise on occasion. The dealer can't find the issues now and they rarely occur, so it's not the end of the world. With the 7 year 100K warranty, I know if these issues get worse in a year or two, I'm covered. And the towing package included is really nice because it pays for towing to an authorized Toyota Prius repair station, not just Joe's Gas and Go.

I believe the greatest probable value in the extended waranty is for its coverage of higher end accessories. A single major failure of the air conditioner, cd changer, nav system, smart key sys, electric windows, or MFD will easily justify the waranty cost. These are probably more likely than a major engine or power train failure.

I bought the extended waranty for these reasons.

My dealer wanted to charge me $2,300 for a 6yr/75,000 miles/$50 deductible warranty. Troy sold me one for just under $1,000 that was 7yr/100,000 miles/$0 deductible. Get it while you can. Troy may not be around forever.

I don't normally purchase the extended warranty, but the Prius is relatively new technology. I did in this case.

Also, the idea behind purchasing this/a new car was to reduce my having to worry about it. One definition of "worry about it" (in my case) means making sure to budget money -- in advance -- for the day when something major breaks.

The extended warranty relieves me (more or less) of this need, at least for rather a while; it was a no-brainer for me.
