Friends: 0 | The dealer offered me the Toyota extended warranty for CAD$1700 for 4 years. That seems like too much. Actually it was $2000 at first and then I said no, and then they said $1700. Anyone here sell for less, in Canada? If not, how much do you think I should be able to get it for? Prius 2004, with 42400 km. P.S. I just bought out my lease, and there is only a week left before my first 3 years is up. |

If that's the case, according to Toyota Canada, it's $1,999 for 84 months/120,000kms (you can extend that to 200,000kms if you wish) and because you're near the end of the basic warranty, you add $200 to that so it should be $2,199, so you're getting a $500 discount.

I note that our American friends are getting it for US$990, so even $1700 seems rather high.

Friends: 0 | OK, I called around elsewhere and others wouldn't go lower than CAD$1700 either. This is for 84 months/120000 km (not 100000 km). So, I went ahead and got that 84/120000 for $1700. One of them claimed their dealer cost is over CAD$1600, but I note the US price is only US$990, so I wonder if that claim for the CAD dealer cost is true. Sure, the US deal is only for 100000 km, but it's also for 7 years and with no deductible. Is it because I purchased after 40000 km? As Tideland Prius says, it's a $200 surcharge for the Canadian Extra Care Protection for cars of this age.

So, the Canadian deal seems even more expensive. The Canadian MSRP for 84 months / 160000 km is CAD$2099, which is about $1780 USD, roughly $800 higher than the discounted US price on this board. (BTW, Danny says the US MSRP is US$1650.) Thus, I'd guess the dealer cost for 84/160 to be closer to around US$900, or say ballpark CAD$1100, or perhaps CAD$1000 for 84/120. Add $150-200 for the late charge, and that's CAD$1200, which means the dealer could still be making $500 off me. So, either the dealers in Canada get shafted, the dealer isn't telling me their real cost, or else my guesses are way off. :P Or are there other differences in the coverage I'm not appreciating?

Friends: 0 | you know I looked into this and realized it was a ripoff so am putting 1500$ in a savings account and if I need it fine if not at the end of 5 years I'll have accumulated the interest and thank you Toyota for saving me the money. If I need it to fix the car fine I'll use it then. As there isn't a whole lot on this car that I can't fix myself I'll take the chance. If Toyota Canada was a little more intelligent about this I'm sure that more people would purchase it but as their pricing is just stupid, I'm opting out. What was the rip for me was the $200 surcharge. Screw you Toyota.

Friends: 23 | Well, Eug didn't get charged that $200 anyway. But yeah, $2k is a lot of money. I'm just thinking about my dad's Camry which is 5 years and 102,000kms. There isn't much out-of-warranty problems. Well, the current problem is a broken spring in the steering wheel mounted controls. Toyota can't replace that button. They have to replace the entire unit at the tune of a few hundred bucks. That's ok, we can live with a "touchpad" button instead of a spring-loaded button.

Also, if I sell this car in 2010, I figure having the Extra Care Protection may help a bit for resale value so it isn't all a loss even if I don't use it.
