I took HUMU into the dealer for the 30k checkup. Quite a list of items to cover including flushing the coolant for both the engine and possibly the inverter should it be needed. Just curious what others have paid for this service and what their dealers told them, etc.

Are you sure that the Prius maintenance schedule calls for that service at the 30,000 miles mark? I don't think that flushing the coolant is recommended before the 100,000 miles service, unless you experience extreme driving conditions.

I don't remember now, but I'm sure it was at least approaching the $200 mark. I know it included checking and /or replacing the PSD fluid. They also cleaned the fuel injectors, which may have not been necessary. What I did pay was less than their first quote. I'm sure they weren't completely jerking me around. It wasn't where I normally have the car serviced (actually 350-400 miles away), but I called them today about getting it in for the 40k mile service since I'm going to be in the same town tomorrow, and they said all that was needed for the 40k service was an oil change and tire rotation. I'll have tires rotated at Les Schwab's when I get home.

I'll probably have the oil changed at a local lube place (either there or in Olympia), since they're are booked up all morning.

Sounds like that list included flushing the wallet.

Toyota's 30k service consists of oil, tires, both filters, and inspect a bunch of things. That's all.

I suggest you reacquaint yourself with the Scheduled Maintenance Guide you should have received with your manual. Don't take their word for it.

I paid about $261 yesterday. They wanted me to add cleaning the injectors and new tires, but I said no. I'll get the tires elsewhere than from the dealer.

<_< According to my "Scheduled Maintenance Guide" for 30,000 miles or 36 months the only additional items [compared to the previous periodic service items - engine oil & filter, tire rotation and inspection of brake linings] are replacing the cabin air filter and the engine air filter. There is a grocery list of "inspections" including the coolants, but flushing and replacing are NOT suggested. Sounds as if the Dealer used his "recommended" 30K service list rather than the Prius list... = MORE PROFIT for the Dealer.

The 100K mile or 120 month list does include [/i]"Replace engine and inverter coolant"

My dealer tried to get me to do all the stuff they do on most toyotas at 30,000 miles. I told him to look at the Prius service book. He brought in a mechanic, and the mechanic said I was right. What Charles posted above is what I had them do. Just refer to the Prius maintenance schedule you got with the car. (Another reason these cars are wonderful.)

In my experience, a 30,000 mile interval is way too long. I've found the cabin filter pretty badly clogged at 15K. The engine air filter is pretty well plugged up too.

They are both easy to replace. Inexpensive preventive maintenance in my opinion and well worth it.

Uh,

Air filter ~$12
Cabin air filter ~$20
Oil filter & washer ~$6
Oil ~$3
Tire rotation ~$0

So, about $41 total, and about an hour of work.

Thanks,
Shawn
