Rhythmic noise when braking

Hi all,

This site was so helpful to me when I was looking to buy a Prius two years ago...and now I'm hoping it's just as helpful in solving a problem with it!

I just got back from a 12-day trip and went to drive to the grocery store, but I came home immediately because the Prius was making weird noises when braking. When I backed out of my parking spot, it made two soft "thumps" that sounded like they were coming from the left front wheel. After that, whenever I braked, I heard the same soft thumps. It sounded like the thumps happened once per tire rotation - the same frequency as the noise you hear when you have a little pebble stuck in the tire treads.

I checked the tire pressure, and all's well there, and I didn't see anything obvious that would have been coming in contact with the tires. The garage in my apt. building is pretty dusty, if that matters.

I've taken the Prius in for all its checkups and oil changes, so I'm not sure what the problem is, and I'm feeling like a bad Prius parent! Any thoughts/advice on what I should tell the Toyota shop guys when I take it in next week?

Edited to add that it's a 2005 with just over 20,000 miles.
