I assume you have a classic prius. This may be a sign that the battery is overheating in the trunk...

It is a 1997 Toyota Prius, if the batery is overheating what can I do about it

Turtle Light - Appears when:
Driving a Prius with the battery-pack extremely drained of electricity, in conditions too hot (typically above 105 F degrees), or conditions too cold (typically below -10 F degrees), so that an orange "turtle" icon displays near the speedometer. This warns the driver to avoid forceful acceleration.

Nothing you really can do except to avoid use of the battery. Also, relax, the battery fan will automatically turn on as needed IF it starts overheating.

No, that would be the original model (which I see has been confirmed already in a reply).

That older one use "D" cells instead of the modular design in the upgrade in 2000 (US) and 2001 (everywhere else), which did indeed show the turtle from time to time.

During my 3 years (60,000 miles) of classic ownership, I never once saw the turtle... despite the extremely cold temperatures here in Minnesota. But I've been told that it recovers fairly quick, only taking a minute or two to warm up enough to resume normal operation. As for getting too hot, I have no idea how that design responds. Make sure the battery-pack fan is working and the exterior vent isn't clogged.
