My 15K dealer service consisted of me going to the dealer and buying an OEM Oil filter for $ 3.95. Then I got the hell out of there.

The bottom line is simply this:

If you're not an educated consumer, you WILL get screwed.

Educate yourself (re: read the manual), and this won't happen again. Also, as others have stated, there are some things you can do yourself in seconds that will save big dollars at the stealership.

No, Toyota does not recommend all that. Your dealer might have, but not Toyota.

The point is, recommended by a *dealer*, not by Toyota. They are different entities.

Its posts like this that remind me why I haven't been to the dealer since I bought the car in 06, 83,000 trouble free miles ago. C'mon, DIYing the oil, filters and tire rotation is not that big of a deal. Its also good exercize. Don't pay dealer service prices. There has never been a simpler car to perform basic maintenance on.

If you do not DIY, having your oil changed by your dealer is probably the cheapest place you can have it done. My dealer also includes a free car wash and inspection. I use Mobil-1 and provide the correct fill amount to the dealer and let him provide the filter.
You will always get the dealer view of extras they would like to sell you but it is easy to say no thanks.

i feel your pain!!!
a check engine light comes on every 7500 miles on my '07 volvo as a reminder to get it serviced.
the only guy who can turn it off is the dealer.
and, they wont turn it off if i don't let them change my oil for $200.
