Default NEW strange brake noise

Hello,

Over the past couple days, my '04 Prius (which I've owned since April) has started making a new noise when braking. It sounds about like I'm tapping the horn really briefly (moreso than I could actually do) whenver I come to a complete stop. It also does it twice quickly when I first turn on the car if I release and apply the brake. This is in addition to the normal whirring/clicking sound the brakes make. The first couple times I heard it, I thought it might be other people honking. I don't seem to have lost braking power or anything, but I'm rather concerned by it. Any ideas before I drag it in to my dealer?

Thanks
-Ben

I thought it was just me. I considered posting about it but figured that I was working the brake oddly and no one would know what I was talking about. My auditory hallucinations have been realized!

The first time I heard this, I was at a stoplight. I heard honking that I swear came from the front-left, only I was in the left lane with a row of traffic to my right. I looked over anyway and saw a Classic Prius. I figured he honked.

A different day at a stoplight I heard it again only this time, I was in the front of the line. Of course I got a little annoyed because the light hadn't even changed yet and someone was honking at me.

Then finally, I was at a stoplight with no one even close and I heard honking. Again from the front-left. This time I knew it was coming from Priapus. I figured I was letting the brakes slip a little and the noise just happened to sound like honking.

This doesn't solve the question of where it's coming from, but it's good to know it's not just me.

What more do you want to know? I'll let the forums know when/if I get it fixed, and what did it.

i have never heard anything remotely like what you are describing.

my brakes do make whirring and ticking sounds but nothing that is loud enough as to be mistaken for another vehicle.

is there anything you are doing that will cause this. iow, can you predict when it will make this sound and how often has it happened?

Dave,

I'm doing nothing unusual -- I'm driving the car exactly as I have for the past seven months, during which it did not make this noise. I tend to be a pretty gentle driver, although since I go to school in Worcester, MA, there are times I'm forced to drive aggressively. The times it makes the noise are described in my first post.

I'm almost tempted to think the computer is actually beeping the horn briefly due to the sound of it, but I see no reason why the computer would even have control of the horn. It's not a solid honk, it's a quick blip, so it's hard to get a proper description of it or track down exactly from where it's coming.

Thanks in advance
-Ben

The first couple of mornings while on vaction in Longmont, CO, a chirping sound was produced when applying the brakes. The temperature was in the low 40's and the altitude in Longmont is 5450'. By noontime the noise had disappeared. After a couple of days the system acclimated itself and did not hear it again. The sound was like high pressure fluid being let thru a small orifice.

Thanks, that's good to hear. It has been getting colder here -- colder than my Prius has experienced yet -- so that may explain it. I'll give it some time to go away.

I've had this same oddity occur as well.

1: At a full stop.

2: Press brake pedal in deeply, and release a little

Result: Loud chirp/squeak (had to describe).

Context: Canadian winter. : ) Could be a result of this, as I seem to be reading above.

I'll be taking into the dealer soon for a 32K servicing, and well let you know what comes of it.

Do so before 36k when the warranty expires. Check here for the TSB. http://priuschat.com/index.php?showtopic=3...amp;hl=br001-07

My car makes the same sound. I scheduled an appointment to diagnose if they'll need to replace the Brake Actuator or not.
