Default Annual smog check

In Finland we have an annual smog check when car is three years old and thereafter annually. Does anyone know how to make Prius ICE run when the car is stopped? It is not possible manually control Prius gas valve. Pressing the gas pedal does not help either. Emissions can't be measured at idle because the internal combustion engine doesn't idle when the car is stopped. Of course you can turn AC full and that starts ICE but it does not help because test criteria says that smog check must be measured at idle and 2000 rpm.

Heikki, on the U.S. Prius you can put the gear selector in D, put your left foot hard on the brake and start easing the accelerator pedal down to the floor. Nothing will happen until you get the accel pedal about half-way and the you'll hear the ICE start at a slightly elevated idle. If you want more rpm's, keep flooring the pedal and revs will increase until you get it near the floor. At that point it sounds like the engine is spinning around 2,000 rpm or so. More gas will not increase rpm's over that. Of course let off the gas before releasing the brake or you'll do a Kimi Raikkonen through the back wall! Incidentally, that's the procedure for a Prius sprint start that I came up with last year. Nothing bad will happen, no lights, chimes or warnings, just a frisky tire-spinning (until TRAC cuts in) launch that has surprised many Honda Civic, VW Golf and most SUV drivers around here.

Heikki:

why are you concerned? it is not up to you to do the test. the people at the testing station will figure out a way or sign off on your certificate.

With the car in "park", just press down the accelerator firmly and the gas engine will start idling (not reving, infact, you have no control over the idle).

Why not just take your Prius to your local Toyota dealer? When I used to live in Salt Lake City, Utah, I had to bring my 4Runner in for its annual Emissions and I&M, otherwise the state wouldn't give you a current tag for the plates. I went to my local Toyota dealer and they took care of everything. I'm sure the factory service manual and TSB's must mention how to perform the gas sample.

Heikki lives in Finland. It is quite possible that dealers may not be allowed to perform smog tests there.

California now requires smog tests on certain cars to be performed at dedicated test centers which are not permitted to perform repairs, should those be required to pass the biannual smog check.

You might want to give it another try Dave. While amped's Prius Sprint might be good for impressing other drivers, it didn't sound like a good idea for an emissions test station. With my car all warmed up, I put it in Park and started slowly pressing down on the accelerator. About half way down the ICE kicked on at something above normal idle (like amped had reported). When I pressed down further, there was a point where the ICE jumped up to a higher RPM. It wasn't reeving like a 20th century car, and like amped had said, it might be around 2000 RPM or so. If you let off on the accelerator part way, the ICE returns to the fast idle, and if you continue to let off on the pedal, the ICE shuts down.

Hopefully this will help Heikki. There will be a bigger problem if the emissions testing station uses a dynamometer. The traction control system in the Prius monitors the rotation of the rear wheels. If their speed is different from the front wheels, the car assumes that there is front wheel slip and the traction control system kicks in.

here they use 4 wheel dyno's and there is a procedure for deactivating the traction control for doing emmission tests.
