my prius broke today

2004, 75 Kmi, when I left work the "BRAKE" and "ABS" lights were on as well as the "!". Noticed it after backing out and the brakes didn't work! Well, they did a little. Like when you loose power boost and you have to mash the pedal to get any friction. The fluid reservoir was full and no leaks under the car, so my bet on a conventional car is a master cylinder, but I didn't get that spongy feeling. My second guess is the regenerative braking, but I'm not sure which part to blame. Had it towed to the dealer from wence it had it's 75K service 2 days ago. Hmmm. Any suggestions with which I can cross examine the dealer tomorrow?

gotta rely on the diagnostic codes they find at the dealership and go from there. unfortunately without those we're all in the dark.

Got a call from the dealer. He said the group leader was looking at my prius. Boy, did that sound bad. Anyway, he found some rust on the rear brake motion sensor, cleaned it, cleared the codes and is driving it around to see if recurs. We'll see.

Got my prius back in working condition, it stops! I asked for the codes and they gave me the diagnostic screen captures, but I missed talking to the mechanic. The codes were C0215 (L R wheel speed sensor), C1247 (stroke sensor), C1313 (OC in main relay 2). The service mgr said they had scraped some rust off the speed sensor, cleared the codes and drove it around for 50 mi and no problem. No charge. I work in embedded, realtime systems and sensors are a pain in the ass.

That's great news. Now it's time to name the dealer. We are quick to complain about poor dealers. We should be equally quick to praise good dealers.

x2. Many service folks unfortunately seem to resort to replacing parts until the codes go away... looks like the guy you got actually used his brain and eyes to actually figure out what the true cause of the problem was without replacing everything.

Kearney Mesa Toyota, SD. I do all the service there and have been quite pleased. Although, the cynic in me says, "Hey, they messed something up during the service and are thanking their lucky stars it came back in one piece!" Sometimes I can't help myself.
