Default Requesting Advice on replacing CC stalk

They say you should never use something for which it was not intended, and that's the case with the Coastal Cc Stalk EV switch for the Prius. After 30 months of use and continued weakening, the Cc stalk recently broke off.

Priorities are priorities of course. My first task was to order and install the Sigma EV button. Done and done. A lesson for the Prius kids out there............always go with the EV button. I actually did the switch before it broke off, but the stalk's fate was already sealed.

At any rate, I'd like to replace the Cc stalk. My local dealer has quoted me a back-of-the-envelope and typically outrageous dealer price of $500. Surprise, surprise.

I don't use Cc much at all, so I'm not in a huge hurry. But it certainly would be nice to replace now at a reasonable cost. If that's my only real option however, then I may just have to suck it up years from now if and when I sell the car (I have no plans to sell).

I've attempted to epoxy it back, with no luck. I know of another here at Priuschat who successfully epoxied his stalk back......but it does not work in my case; it's just not strong enough for the rigors.

So..................any recommendations? Am I stuck with the dealer? Should I try other dealers? Are there other shops that might actually be able to order & fix? It certainly seems like I'm stuck with a dealer.

I'm tempted to go up to them and say "I'll pay you $200 or I'm not going to fix it at all."

Maybe I can order it myself and install, or have someone install. I wouldn't know where to start, hence my post.

At any rate, I value the insights of this community. Let me know what ideas you have. Thanks!

Marc

If you're talking about the cruise control stalk alone, the part retails for around $97 and is available at discount online parts sites for around $67. See, e.g., Parts.com:

And here's a pdf of the cruise control section of the service manual (note pages CC-30 et seq cover the cruise control stalk):

Good luck.

Boo / Tom:

Thanks for the info. I've got a parts.com stalk on order and on the way. I'll give the install a try myself. We'll see. Regardless, I think I'm well on my way to spending a whole lot less than $500.

I bet it's not that tough. Once you get the cover off of the steering column I will bet that how to do the exchange will be pretty self-evident. Worst case, find a local auto repair place (non-toyota) and get a quote, I bet it'll be cheap since you already have the part.

Actually, the only thing that makes this dubious for a DIY is that you need to remove the steering wheel which requires an SST (special service tool) . I don't know whether you need a special Toyota tool or if you could substitute a generic 2 or 3 jaw puller.

I am attaching the other parts of the service manual that describe removal / installation of the steering pad and steering wheel.

Don't think so. I think I reached the apex of my limited DIY skills with this (neoprene MFD sun shade; I used scissors and tape):

Also, here's a link to what I think is the rest of the service manual: Index of /Documents_2006/

Tom, I'm always been blown away, and appreciative of your useful tidbits like this
I too, use the stalk to accelerate & decelerate way too much, so eventually this'll save be money.
