Default New Tires?

So I took my '09 Prius to get the oil changed yesterday; I've had it since October and I've put around 23,000 miles on it (hour long commute each way). The guy informs me that my tires are close to needing to be replaced. New tires?? Really?? I don't know much about tires, but it seems awfully soon to be needing new ones! What's my deal???

My 2008 that I've had since March 2008 and has 22,170 miles on it just got new tires today. The originals were down to the wear bars and would slip with no effort. I got home from Express Tire at 2:00PST. 4 new Cooper CS4 Touring in 185/65/15 T-Rated with an 80k mile warranty for $403 OTD. Alignment was good so no need to pay for it.

The OEM Integrity tires are noted for poor tread wear, especially if you use the Toyota recommended tire pressures. On my 04 I found running at 40/38 gave me longer wear. That's where I now run the tires on my 09. So far, so good.

Yeah, they don't have a lot of life. Replacements with as-good fuel economy but longer life: Goodyear Assurance Fuel Max, Nokia WR, and I-forget-which-Michelin.

I replaced the original Goodyear Integrity tires on my 2004 at 15K miles. Meanwhile some owners get 50K miles from those tires. The treadlife depends a lot on your driving patterns, speed, etc.

I have about 22K on my 2007, and are just about ready to replace the OEM tires. Very disappointed about that - though I am hoping that new tires might cut down some on road noise, and give better traction than what I'm getting now.

Nokian Wr G2 best damn all season out there!

No mileage hit, great tire mileage, and without question the best all season tire traction out there!

I hate you guys that can get Nokians.....closest dealer from me is 800 miles away. So far, havent noticed a decrease in MPG with the Cooper CS4 Touring. Bumped them to 40/38 to see how they ride before going to 42/40. They have the same 44psi max as the GYI's.

You can order them by phone from: Nokian Tires - Winter Tires, Snow Tires and much more from the Tire Factory (note that this is a "dot net" not a "dot com" which is a different outfit) and have them installed locally. I bought two sets of Nokian WRs a while back this way (two Prii) and it worked out well. I just installed a set of WRg2s that were available locally in CT so don't hate me.
