Default brake light recall

i went to the dealer today to check if i qualified for any recalls and they said i qualified for something about brake lights... not the actual housing but some wiring under the steering wheel. I haven't noticed any problems, so im wondering if anyone else has had this done, and if i should go and get it done?

The recall is for the brake light switch over the brake pedal under the steering column. There is oxidation of the contacts possible so rear lights do not flash. Many toyotas involved. Minor repair.

On a similar note, some are actually affected by the problem, others may never notice.

I was of the former in that my cruise control refused to operate once it detected the faulty signal by flashing it's light at the first time I used the brakes to cancel cruise.

ok, now I'm confused. The brake light switch TSB hasn't anything to do with the actual brake light housing (plastic on the rear of the Prius) warping? It has to dowith a switch that turns the brake lights on/off and is under the dash at the brake pedal? I haven't had either of these issues (cruise not working or plastic warping of the rear light housing). Any info to clear this up?

You're right; the brake switch TSB has nothing to do with the rear brake light housing.

The switch recall affected many Toyota and Lexus models, and corrected a part that was failing due to oxidation damage. Although this issue was widely spread, few owners actually experienced it.

As far as I know, there has been no TSB issued for the brake light housing. I'm two months out of date on my TechInfo knowledge, though.

Most of us are eligible for the switch TSB; a few of us - myself included - are experiencing melty brake light housings. These housings are covered under the 3/36k warranty.

Their is no TSB( Technical Service Bulletin) on the rear tail lights, just looked. The brake switch is not a TSB but a SSC ( Special Service Campaign) covering certain 04 Prius' in the Toyota line-up. 8)

Thanks, Rick. I should be more careful about my TLAs. SSCs are the ones that are mailed out to all affected owners, yes?

Correct you are. SSC's, or you can think of them as recalls, are sent to registered vehicles that fall in the VIN range. Not all may be affected and when you get a notice, take it to your dealer and they can check to see if your Prius falls in the recall and whether it needs done. At the same time while checking your VIN, we can also see if any other open SSC's are needed to be done. 8)
