Can't say much about surface street/traffic figures, but FWIW, I made this drive
from:Costa Mesa, ca to:33.645778,-117.740822 to:Yuma, az to:I-405 N @33.647700, -117.745200 to:Costa Mesa, ca - Google Maps
from Costa Mesa, CA to Yuma, AZ and back, on a single tank and got just over 52pmg both ways. Note the route involves 4000 feet of vertical change in both directions, and the cruise control was < set to 75mph and never broke> Oh, and the AC was on too . Try this in your fiesta :-)

And if you weren't already enjoying your choice to buy a Prius...
[average price of regular for me right now, $4.14 ]
USA National Gas Temperature Map

Peace.

Talking Re: I Beat the EPA--Post 'em here

Well, I am pretty consistently seeing about 60-65MPG driving both around the Denver area and to/from Boulder and Co Springs - my highest was 76MPG driving from the Burbs to downtown Denver. The Grey Bomb now has about 2K miles on it and the MFD average is up to 52.5MPG, and slowly climbing (I've never reset it since purchase so I'll always have the lifetime average). It was at 37MPG when I picked it up...

Earlier this afternoon I drove down to Colorado Springs for a dance party - Scangage II said I averaged 62.5 there and 61.8 back - very cool!!! And this was with the A/C on (lowest setting).

BTW, I have configured the car to 42/40PSI, drive the speed limit and use hypermiling techniques whenever I can (probably about 25% of the time). This is almost a 10MPG improvement over the Silver Bomb I had in Silicon Valley, which was also configured and driven the same way. I am continually amazed at how wonderful a car the Prius is!! It will be even more exciting to see what happens to my mileage when I have the Hymotion L5 module installed this fall - whohoo!

oh.. and fyi.. if you take the headrests off and move the front seats up as far forward as possible.. you can get them to lay down flat to make the cabin like a bed!

"gay issues" - What kind of idiotic statement is that? Or are you an authority on the subject...you seem to have a lot of knowledge on how to use the Prius...

What an idiot.

51.6 mpg the last 70 miles in the suburbs, and I only have 200 miles on the car. tire pressures 38/36. Just take your foot off the gas whenever going downhill. 50 mpg is a piece of cake. The new EPA ratings are conservative.

been a while since i checked in, but driving the prius more often lately reminded me of this site.

'05 prius w/ #8.

anyways, i've been consistently getting 53-55 average over my usual santa rosa / milpitas commute in northern california, consisting of 80 highway miles over 20% hills, 20% sulb-30 mph freeway traffic, and the rest around 65 - 70 constant mph to stay with traffic (which kills mpg for a newb like me imo).

tires set to 38-36 because of the usual wind across the rhichmond-sanrafael bridge and rolling hills of sonoma. load varies, since i use the prius for my courier route sometimes (hov sticker helps too), which adds up to 150 pounds in the trunk and back seat.

i'm also beating the epa in my '03 camry LE i4 with 33-34 mpg overall using the miles/tank method. i unfortunately take this car for my commute more often than the prius, but at least, with a little non-hybrid hypermiling, i'm beating the old epa rating by 1-3 mpg and the new epa rating by 4-6 mpg. thanks to some of the hypermiling threads in here of course.

Default NO A/C during the heat wave is helping!

I was reading another thread about how the batteries work best at room temp (~77deg), so I have been doing an experiement:

We are in a heat wave here in the piedmont of North Carolina (Raleigh)
10 straight days of upper 90's and several over 100deg!!

It has taken a few days to get used to it, but I have been driving with the windows down and leaving the A/C off to see if I noticed any difference.

The MDS says it all! I'm now at 65.4 mpg for 375mi. on this tank. This 30 minute screen was missing the first five minutes which has been consistently between 50-60mpg! (I've even had a couple 70+ readings)

There is no loss of milage for me as the temp increases inside the vehicle. In fact, I am having a better tank now than during the regular warm weather before that was close to ideal 77deg.

Thanks for listening...

Jim

I've been finding that even on some of the shorter trips I've had to make I'm still seeing exceptional mileage. Yesterday I drove to downtown (18 miles there, 18 back and about 50/50 freeway/surface streets) and achieved 74MPG there/60MPG back for an average of 67MPG on a 36mile RT total. These figures are per Scangage II.

This is with a brand new 2008, only 5 weeks old, break-in period still in process...

Very Cool!!!
