Default Fuel Gage Bars - Misleading?

On Saturday afternoon, my fuel tank went down to three bars remaining. I drove a lot on Saturday and Sunday. It remained on three bars until late Sunday when it dropped to two bars. I drove 22 miles on Monday and it dropped to one bar. My wife, who previously owned a 2001 Prius experienced inaccuracies with the fuel gage, took the 2005 Prius this morning , and after about 3-5 miles, the car began to flash "Add Fuel." She plans to fill the tank soon, which will mean I'll only get about 340-345 miles for this tank.

Anyway, has anyone else experienced these inaccuracies with the fuel gage? Is there anything that can be done to correct it?
